SWMBO drives an X Trail and it is getting close to needing a new set of brake pads. Can any one recommend a brand that are of value and ones that have a lower amount of brake dust, the genuine ones are dreadful for it, the Alloy wheels need cleaning weekly. I was told by a few people to use Bendix??
What your opinion?

Cheers Kev

Bendix, Advance if made for the x-trail or 4WD which are very similar.
I have the Bendix Advance on my Astra sedan, the Bendix 4WD pads on my Patrol. Both are very good, very little dust and LESS rotor wear than originals.
Look at the alloy wheels on most European cars and they are filthy black.
The alloys on my Astra still look spotless and yet the wheels haven't been cleaned for months. (We barely have enough water in SE Qld to drink let alone waste on washing the car....)
Cheers

Bendix gets my vote.

4WD for the truck, and Ultimates for the sedan.

If there is no dust, they aren't working hard enough. To keep the alloys on my sedan looking spick and span they need to be cleaned daily. They are dirty within 50kms of stop start driving.

4WD pads on the other hand take about a f/night to make the alloys look dirty.

"If there is no dust, they aren't working hard enough"

Can't agree with you on this.

The Jackaroo never has brake dust, pads last 160000k plus on an automatic, and there is no problem stopping either dry or after river crossings, with or without camper trailer. Mags never get dirty from brakes, and rotor wear is virtually non-existant. Mine has 130,00k and there is a barely discernible lip, but if I was to put new pads on now (which it doesn't need) the discs would not require machining.

There is no engineering reason why the European method of soft pads wearing rotors and pads in 30,000k or less is necessary. It sure gives them fat profits from fast moving slow down parts though.

As others have observed, the best thing to do with your new Euro car is to throw out the OEM pads from the day you get it and fit some Bendix pads instead.

I've always replaced with Bendix pads. But the brakes on our Xtrail work brilliantly, so I'd tend to buy the genuine ones again - we also get plenty of brake dust on the fronts.

I agree about the genuine ones but the amount of dust that they create is unbelievable. I think I'll give the Bendix pads a go and see if there is much of a difference.

Hi Kev,
The guys at the Australian X-Trail forum suggest trying brake pads from EBC brakes they do them for the X-Trail part number DP61247. Check this link for your nearest dealer www.ebcbrakes.com.au/
Also suggest you read what they have to say in the X-Trail forum. I have an exy and find it interesting I intend to try these brakes when the time comes.
By the way I have no connection with EBC.
Link for X-Trail Forum www.australianxtrail.com/
Hope this helps.

Happy X-Trailing

Hi Ozscot,
I'll keep them in mind, we had it serviced a couple of days ago and they reckoned that the brakes were down to about 30% left after 50 000km. We use the X Trail for most of our daily commuting So by the time the next service is due I will probably have them changed then.
Cheers Kev
