I am considering buying a seat of stratos suspension seats for my 100 series cruiser, hopefully to improve the stress on my old back. I have been told that the suspension seats are not good for 4WD work as the movement of the seat hinders control of the vehicle, which sounds logical. Could anyone give me their experiences with these or similar seats, with or without suspension, and in particular if there was a problem with control with suspension type seats.

I have a 1985 HJ60 Landcruiser (very stiff springs) The suspension seats saved me buying a new vehicle. First installed one for my wife - she like it so much I bought a second one. Have had them for several years and they make the HJ60 ride very comfortable. No trouble at all with vehicle control. Les

I have 5 narrowed discs in my lower back.

I own a GU Nissan. No need to fit alternative seating. Have no problems driving the Patrol.

Drive some other vehicles and have heaps of problems. The quality of seats in a vehicle is very important and unfortunately some manufacturers forget it.

Hi All

Dont know about a landcruiser but have two stratos ltss seats in my isuzu 4wd truck - no others available - not sufficient depth below seat for mounting.

As you may know seats right over front wheels (forward control) and most road movements transmitted to driver and in particular passenger - passenger seat pretty poor - tried installing more padding - not much improvement.

The stratos seats made all the difference - spring mounted with hydraulic damper - truck now a pleasure to drive and the movment, in a sort of an elipse, is only slight (50mm maybe) but enough to make an astounding difference to comfort.

Hope the above helps

Lindona. I'd suggest sitting in a 100 that has a set fitted to ensure there is sufficient head room. The base on some suspension seats can lift you up too high. Most will come with an adjustable dampner as well as ride height adjustment allowing you to lock the seat in a set position for rough driving as at times the seat can bounce quite a bit if not set right making it hard to keep a steady foot on the brake or accellerator. A good quality fixed replacement seat with side support & ajustable lumbar would IMHO suit a 100 series better but then it may not suit your tired old back.
Cheers Craig...........

I've got a Kab suspension seat fitted to my GU Patrol and find it excellent. There is no problem with contolling the vehicle because of the seat movement when 4WDing. As intended, it takes the shock out of sharp bumps when off/on road. At the height of seat travel, your feet are still in the same position on the pedals as when the seat is bottomed out. If the 4WDing a person does, throws them around so much as to hinder the control of the vehicle, suspension or fixed seating won't change that. I enjoy the seat suspension riding on top of the vehicle suspension when off roading, the only problem is when we swap drivers and I'm sitting on the factory passenger seat and my partners going through the gears saying" Ahhh, now thats better" The properly designed seat itself is great for problem backs as well. Try to find a 100 series with those seats in them to see what they're like. You'll probaly find if some one has them they'd be more than happy to show them off to you, just to show off how good they really are. I'm currently looking for a similar seat for my old man's GU, after he and mum drove mine up to Darwin, he said his problem back and hip and leg pain were non existant whilst on the road in the good seat. All hail the Kab
Cheers, Matt
