stat writeoff what can be used in rebuilding/ example ( vehicle is a stat writeoff submergered in fresh water vin chassis and body numbers registed as stat writeoff cant be used right? can you buy chassis and body shell not on register and tranfer all parts into vin chassis body? if so why are they stat writeoffs as chassis and body cant really be damaged by fresh water. Also can you get a repairable wreck body badly damaged and switch the tags as fresh water does not damage the body.someone out there must have dealt with this situation?any info would help cheers mr polar

I bought a Stat.write - off a few years ago, but only to get the mechanicals & electrics from that vehicle to rebuild another that happened to go for a swim too.The donor vehicle had hit a tree sideways & the chassis & every panel except the right rear door was stuffed. The VIN No. etc were recorded & removed & lodged with the Rego mob so it can"t be re-used. After stripping every thing off that I wanted, the leftovers went to the recyclers. Cant see why you couldn't use body panels etc on another vehicle, so long as you don't try to use the writeoff chassis to build something that you will want to rego.

There are two types of "write-off's" on the written off vehicle register (WOVR). The economic write-offs are deemed by the insurance company concerned to be un-economic to repair can legally be repaired and re-registered and must pass an inspection first as does any unregistered vehicle and in WA it costs $56.50 for the first inspection and $39.10 for re-inspections should it fail the first time. You have to produce original invoices, receipts, etc for the parts & labour used to repair the vehicle and if the parts are second-hand the VIN from the donor vehicle the parts came from is required. The second type is the statutory write-off and these vehicles can never be re-registered but parts can be used off them to get another vehicle roadworthy. I am pretty sure but may stand corrected that any vehicle when fully submerged in fresh or salt water is classed as a statutory write-off.

Thats what I said. I bought a structualy damaged vehicle (Stat write - off) to repair a" economic write - off ", although the vehicle was never insured anyway. Just a cheap source of parts.

In Qld once the vehicle has been written off, the VIN no. goes on to a register. My neighbor's car was written off in an accident(borderline repair)but because of a whole heap of insurance/finance co. drama he had to get it fixed.Once it gets fixed it has to be inspected by a special division of Qld transport for a fee of $550 to be removed from the write off register,so, yes you can use a write and get it registed (IN QLD)

his car was REPAIRED after being declared written off
he had not long bought it, but the finance owing and the insurance payout ,WAY different numbers so it was decided to be repaired (NOT BY HIM).I cannot tell you if it remains on the register but there is a process in place up here (QLD)
I've been in wrecking yards looking for parts when wrecks have come in from an auction yard displaying stickers on the windscreen stating that this vehicles is a repairable write-off and has been registered as such, perhaps there is some sort of write off grading system that identifies vehicles that are borderline repair/write-off & vehicles that are good for scrap only and that could be potential "ID donor's" which is why they have an intense government rego inspection(not an ordinary rego looky) to see if it has had a rebirth, ie stolen car with write-off cars VIN(that's why it has to go to a special inspection

Viehicle identification numbers (VIN) can not be taken from one vehicle and put onto another as the VIN is unique to each vehicle.

If the vehicle is a staturatory write-off it can not be re-registered, it can only be used for parts.

Repairable write-off can be re-registered once repaired and inspected, however will alwaty appear on the written off register when a search is done.
