On my way to Melb a couple of weeks back, I took a detour south of
Bonang (in north East Gippsland) at a
sign "Old
Bonang Highway" According to my road map, the track looks like it is complete and open and skirts the east side of the
Snowy River NP for about 70-80Km. I travelled the first 10Km before rain and lack of maps and recovery gear turned me back.
The first few Km tracked near or under power cables and occasionally into good rain forest. It gave all the signs of an interesting trip as it headed south east into mountain country
Has any member travelled this route?
Any info appreciated
Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris. My guess is that you were looking at the Yalmy Road. The
Bonang end is also known as Rising Sun Road. It skirts the eastern edge of the
Snowy River national
Park.
It has been many years since I traveled it but when I did (in summer) it was very easy going. It provides access to the Deddick Trail and
Jacksons crossing via Varneys Tk and it ends up back at Orbost.
Cheers Tony.

Thanks Tony. I'll try to fit it in when next down that way. Not after great challenges - just great
places without the crowd. Seems there could be good prospects of both on that road. The road
sign a few k south of
Bonang is a green timber
sign, quite weathered, and the dirt track is overgrown in
places. Suspect the track is slippery in wet - especially where it travels under the power lines.
All the best
Chris
