Glenn (VIC)
Hello all,
I received a bad phonecall from nowimnumberone who has suffered a nasty work incident. It now sounds like he will no longer be named nowimnumberone as he has severely damaged his numberone in a work place incident. He has had a part of one finger squashed in an engine he was working on, in between the crank shaft and the timing belt. On last report he was waiting for an
ambulance to take him from
Bendigo to the Northern Hospital for surgery. Best wishes for Jim and Tab, Christi, Ash, Penny, Diamond and Trev in Jim's recovery. Unfortunatley for Jim I am sure the jokes will come thick and fast like:
"he can now fake picking his nose at the traffic lights"
"Jim will now get a discount on a manicure"
"Jim will now be able to wear mittens"
etc etc etc.
I am sure though that once the drugs wear off, his sense of humour will return and the list of jokes will increase. I will be visiting him tomorrow and provide an update as soon as I know more.
Cheers
Glenn

Glenn, please pass on our best wishes for a speedy recovery. I know what those digit injuries are like. iiiiiissssssshhhhhh
. Stuck one into an auger once and took out a chip of bone. Social inverted mid finger looks crooked. No
ambulance, drove a manual Rangie to Colac 50 minutes away with the injured left hand.
. One staff member had a cow chop the top joint off when a cow stood on a marker she incautiously had on her finger. Washed the finger tip away with a hose to the effluent dam :-(

Poor Jim he will have long recovery ahead, I hope all goes
well with any treatment he may have. Hope it wasn't his typing finger, that could be a disaster lol.
A few years ago hubby had a 450kg road
ranger gearbox fall on his hand and sever his tendons, didn't hurt until after surgery though. We spent a very stressfull 12 weeks waiting to find out what degree of use he would have, but thankfully he has regained 90% and can still spin a spanner.
I feel for his wife too, it's not easy to see one you love in pain.

Worst comes to worst, they can now graft a toe from his foot to replace the missing digit (legit...)
I guess that would make him "nowimnumberTOE"

Latest update is that Jim is suffering due to our current health crisis. Bracks may have employed over 7000 nurses during his time in office, but he has no way improved the way those with injuries are treated. If there are no doctors or surgeons, there is no treatment. Jim arrived at the Northern Hospital at 11.30 this morning and was checked in straight away and allocated a bed. Whilst the nurses treated him
well and monitored his blood sugar levels, he was not able to be given any pain killers until a doctor had signed it off. Jim finally received some morphine at 5.00pm this evening, having nothing to ease his pain from the time he arrived at the hospital. Jim has also had to fast until he is operated on, and so has not eaten for over 36 hours. Being a diabetic, this is not helpful either.
Jim is still in high spirits and can loves the humour in the above posts. He cannot recall how it all happened and is hoping that his finger can be fixed rather than be amputated below the second knuckle. He is not impressed that no one had even looked at his finger since it was dressed at the
Bendigo Hospital last night. It still has the grease and oil on it from prior to the accident and the concern is that considering the time frame between the accident and the next
check on his finger will be past a 24 hour period, he may have to join the
Bendigo Stumpy Club.
Tab, Penny and Diamond are spending the night at a motel nearby and hopefully I will hear some more news soon.
Jim appreciates all the posts and is thankful for such support.
Cheers
Glenn

Glad to hear it's getting better.
Agree the pollies should read this. Federal and State, there are issues for both. The Federal Govt has pushed the "get private insurance if you want decent health care and we'll give you a tax break" angle.
Unfortunately not all families can afford $4000 a year. I fear we are heading down the USA track of: no insurance, no health care.
Cheers,
Jim.

You would think that a workplace accident would be covered by Workcover which means you can have treatment by the surgeon of your choice in a private hospital.....

Hi Andrew,
You are so right, unfortunately very few know this to be the case. Who knows if Workcover have even been informed of the incident yet. Being a public holiday in metropolitan
Melbourne, I doubt they would be on the case. Unfortunately when it comes to Workcover, very few employers know what the process is, let alone the employee.
Cheers

Glenn,
Employers are duty bound to know the process when there is a workplace injury. The law is clear on this (political stuff aside LOL).
All employers must hold injury insurance, it is a legal requriement.
Call me tomorrrow, I know a little about this and am happy to help Jim be dealt with properly.
If, and I say if, his employer is breaching legislative guidelines the matter needs to be dealt with.
Cheers,
Jim.

Political snides aside, as you mentioned Glenn it was a public holiday in
melbourne, and that hospital is a major trauma centre. I have nothing but praise for them really, have been there myself as a patient, my parents have dealt with them, Al's parents. Most recently my dad who was a very lucky camper to be able to be operated on when he was, though we were warned that if something happened out on the Hume Hwy that would have priority over him and his condition was very serious. It's easy to lay blame on people, and for some reason we humans feel the need to do just that, we jump up and down and point the finger [pardon the pun] and let off steam, but when it comes to perhaps being able to do something about it, we go hide, or pass the buck or blame others. You deal with the public system you have to take a number and wait, rightly or wrongly that's the system and unfortunately the hospital develops a reputation it doesn't deserve.
The main thing is that Jim is OK.

Hi Lyn,
I am not critisising the hospital, I am critisisng the state of our current health system. It is ok for those who can afford private health insurance, but for those who cannot it is just bad luck according to some. Then again, to be given a bed at 11.30am and then have to wait hours for even pain relief before finally being looked at at 7.30pm is insane.

dad went in at 11am, was seen by several people, conferences held, finally taken to theatre at 9.45pm, he was administered relief, and we were asking lots of questions and following up where we could...I don't think the public health system is worse than it was 20 years ago, but I think the demands on it are greater....

Just heard from Tab, and all is good. Jim didn't lose much of his manhood, in fact he has only lost the the fingernail and some of the skin and bone in that area. He has received a skin graft, but he is not sure where the skin came from to cover his finger. I have heard that Jim was already circumcised, but maybe I have been lead astray and his foreskin is now attached to his finger....lol...so now I have no idea what his sign on will be!
Cheers

Good to hear he's not full stumpy ( yet !! ) unlike 2 mates of
mine, one had his finger go through the rear sprocket of his dirt bike while cleaning the chain, the other got friendly with a bandsaw !!.
Tell Jim for me to get the claim form filled in quick smart and make sure he makes copies of ALL reciepts / paperwork. Employer pays the small initial cost component then it is handed over to the workcover agent and Jim will then talk to case managers etc. He will not be left out of pocket. If he needs any help, let me know as i have lots of friends in the right
places ( worksafe, workcover & insurance agents) and we can sort out any dramas.
Geez i have to go back to the alfred tomorrow for another diagnostic, they are talking about skin grafts etc, and i'm not jewish - so now you guys have got me worried :-))))

"maybe I have been lead astray and his foreskin is now attached to his finger..."
That puts a new slant on the idea of giving someone the finger.
I guess if he wears a condom over it, at least he'll be safe.
Not sure what Tab will make of it either.
Glenn, what hand did it happen to. Just don't want to be accused of touching another man's member when I shake his hand next time I catch up with him.
