Hey guys,
I have a 2003 patrol that I bought at 25,000klms and according to the log book the clutch was replaced at 15,000klms they stated that the previous owner had been towing and burnt out the clutch. The car is now at 75,000klms and the clutch feels heavy and stiff and the last 5 cms an almost grinding feeling. Also the geras do not mesh and seem to change as smooth as they used to and when goin g into 5th gear it just sort of pops in not really engaging smoothly. My regular mechanic stated that it does not feel right and the clutch is not slipping but fels like the pressure plates/springs? arent disengaging properly and that it is not wear and tear because after just 60,00klms ( and No towing ) the clutch should be fine. I took my mates Patrol with similar klms and it feels much lighter and smoother. I have it booked into Nissan and of course the service advisor states "we will have to look at it to see if its wear and tear" if they agree that it does not feel right but need to open it up, should I get my mechanic to view the clucth when it is out in order to get a second opinion?? The car is under new car warranty and i dont want to wait until it is completley stuffed before I do something about it.
Thoughts please.

I think you are doing the right thing in regards to getting it fixed before you are left stranded some where, and also by taking to Nissan you will not be voiding warranty as taking it else where under a warranty situation Nissan will not pay your mechanic for the work or parts needed if any. I would say a definate issue with clutch, possibly spigot bearing if its had a lot of dirt and crap get in the bell housing but this should be changed regardless of klms when the box was previously out and should be done again this time, there only roughly a $10 item. If they try and blame you for abuse on clutch and are not willing to pay then I would take the clutch and pressure plate to your mechanic and possibly a brake and clutch specialist and get a second opinion. They usually wont let a clutch through warranty as they class it as a item like brake pads etc. See what they find when they pull apart and go from there. Regards Steve M

patrols run a spigot bush and rarely need replacing

it does sound like fingers on pressure plate have collapsed.

should be warranty. the only way they should knock back warranty is if there is signs of slipping the plate too much or down shifting at too higher revs
any brake and clutch place will know straight away by looking at it and the flywwheel. find a daikin supplier and they should have a brochure on clutch problem causes.

spigot won't cause those sort of symptoms. The prob will be the presure plate but I bet nissan won't come to the party.

Hey,
Thanx heaps guys the more info and knowledge about thsi issue I can throw at them the better. I was talking to a friend of mine at work and he used to be the service advisor at Holden, he had a friend and his son had a new holden in which the clutch had buggered and he had been doing heaps of burnout and stuff but Holden still repaired/replaced the clutch under new car warranty.
I think it seems strange that it went so quick ( 15,000klms in the first place ) but to only do 60,000 no towing, little off road and I know how to drive a manual properly and it it on the way out. Surely you dont spen $40,000 on a new car for nothing......or is this the way things are these days.

Holden replaced the clutch in my Rodeo @ 54k. They said there was a lot of dirt in the bellhousing. Prob as a result of going through muddy bog holes! Anyway they replaced it under warranty. Mates Patrol 4.2 yes that's 4.2 everybody (hehe) had to replace his clutch at 47k. He obviously wasnt happy and put in a HD daikin as advised by the dealer. Dealer said the std clutch were average.
