Hi I am about to purchase my 1st portable fridge and like the look and feel of the Evakool 55litre made from yellow plastic.
I did a search on this forum re evakool but all the info is 2 years old or more and some goes back to a time when evakool is said to have sold some duds.

So is there anyone out there who has 1st hand recent experience with the type described above?
Also the price you may have paid for a comparable unit.

Thanks Ross

Hi Ross,
I have the 70 Litre Evakool Fridgmate which is the yellow poly fridge you have mentioned.
I am wrapped. I did a lot of research before buying this fridge/freezer and have already given it quite a workout. It draws much less from the batteries than I expected.
I purchased this model because it also fits perfectly as a seat in my trailer sailer and wind up camper as well as length ways in the back of the Landcruiser.
My best mate purchased the fibreglass Evakool just before the new range was released and he is really jealous as he is always careful about watching that his kids don't sit on the fridge but with the Fridgemate you don't have to worry about it.
I like having the ability to vary the ratio of fridge to freezer depending on what we are doing. Our last trip was over 30 degrees for 5 days camped at the mouth of the Kolan River near Bundaberg and I ran it as all freezer on setting #3 of one deep cycle battery without any driving or solar panel and the fridge was still going when we left to drive home. Not bad I reckon.
I paid $1069 from the ARB shop about 2 months ago.

Yell out if you want to know anything else.

cheers,
Brett

I wonder why he doesn't want his kids to sit on his fibreglass one, I sit on mine.

I guess he thought that the flex after a while might be too much for the fibreglass and eventually crack.

Thanks Brett for your quick response.Thats what I wanted to hear
Im not too concerned about its shape and size as it will be in the back of the 75 series on a cushioned platform.
I was offered the 55 litre for approx $960 and the 70 was about the same as what you paid.
I guess the prices are fixed;)

Im off to a 4wd show soon ,maybe I can snare a bargain.

ROSS

Anyone else??

We've had our 60 lt one for 3years now and no worries, I bought one of the Jaycar plug in current testers, and put an inline fuse in the power cord. The fridge draws 2.5 amps in economy mode and 5.5 to 6.0 amps in boost mode. We also have a freind with an Engel 40lt and his also performs very well. The only reason we went for Evakool was the way the lid opened on the 60 lt, and the size. The 60 Engel was too big for our space that we had at the time. Cheers unc.

Yes, Impressive getting 5 days off one Deep Cycle battery with no other input....I get about 1.5 to 2 days max out of my 40ltr Engel depending on Ambient temp. Interested to know what the EvaKool draws? Sounds very economical.....

OK bring on the mockers.
You guys are so pedantic. (Ha)
I have just done my sums and we went camping for 5 days but arrived at about 12pm on the Friday and left just before lunch on Tuesday so technically the time that the alternator was not putting anything into the battery was 4 days.
I have a fairly new Delkor 100a/h marine deep cycle battery and all I can say is that the fridge did not stop working for that period.
The nights were cold which must have helped a bit and the fridge was always in full shade under a large open marquee during the day.
Also as Uncle has said above it only draws 2.5 amps in economy mode and I had it set on number 3 (out of 10) which was cold enough to hold the meat frozen at the bottom at the motor end of the fridge and cold milk at the other end.
Everything that went into the fridge was frozen and was put in just before we left home and the fridge had also been running for a day before we left home so was already down to temperature.
Based on all of the above I can only imagine that it did not need to cycle much during the first 2 days due to the SUPERIOR insulation qualities of the Evakool range.
In reply to Shaker above I do not usually include in my amerage consumption figures the time that the fridge is off during it's cycle so generally will work on about 25 amps per day under ideal conditions but as everything was pre frozen and the duration as it turned out was really only 4 days, I would imagine that it may have only averaged at about 20 amp/hrs per day using a total of 80-90.

Whatever happened the fridge was still going off the same battery when I started the car to leave on the Tuesday.

Cheers,
Brett

You have to wonder why they only have 2 years warranty on motor when they use the same Danfoss 12/24v DC Compressor - BD35/BD50 as the waeco and they give 5 years, Why?

This is a danfoss thing the motor's for evakool are sorced in australia and are only given 2 years warranty the ones for waeco are bought overseas and yes they are the same motor they get 5 years warranty. I believe waeco have alot more to do with danfoss than they let know ie. may own some of it or all of it for that matter These are just my thought so no fact about them owinig it but would not suprise me.

Didn't EvaKool change it's name from SupaKool which where crappy. My old man has a SupaKool and has had nothing but problems and he was told that they changed names to EvaKool because they where having major problems with the Compressor unit. I could be wrong but this is what I have been led to believe.....EvaKool hasn't been around very long.....

Hi Teabag,

Yes you are correct, they did change the name. We have had a Supakool 47 ltr for 7 years before the compressor died. All the compressors and parts for the Supakool's were sold to the USA and they changed the name then. We recently had it converted to a Danfoss compressor and it works perfect. We swear by them.

Cheers P & J.

Yes, My old man had the same issue with the compressor and he was offered (at his expense) to replace with the Danfoss unit which he did. Since this it has worked really well so I guess they have sorted the issues?????

The Evakool is a very good fridge up there with the Engel and Autofridge, have no fear you can expect a good run out of it.
