G'day all, Just had the tappets adjusted on the ute, and I was wondering how they go about doing it... Can someone let me know the process so I can save myself $135... next time and do it myself....???

Setting tappets can be a drama if you're not familiar with it. What is a pretty easy, but long winded job to a mechanic can be an excercise in frustration for someone that isn't familiar with the "traps for young players". Particularly on a diesel. Get it wrong and you could burn out a valve or maybe damage a piston if ya get it really wrong!

I know - I did exactly that as a young man and was in rush to get an 11 litre AEC diesel engine ina big crane ready for a job. Ended up damaging 2 brand new cylinder heads! The boss was NOT impressed!

If you want me to give you a blow by blow description, I will, but be prepared to tear your hair out if ya get it wrong.

Bit like the bloke that went into the smash repairs with a small dent in the guard. The repairer said it would cost $125.00. He then got a hammer, looked at the job for a while and struck the guard with the hammer. The dent popped straight out and was perfect. The bloke complained $125.00 was a bit expensive for just a hit with a hammer. The repairer said, "$5.00 for the use of the hammer, and $120.00 for knowing where to hit."

As Bilbo says, it's time-consuming. The hardest part is finding that timing marker down by the front crankshaft pulley. The picture in the workshop manual is not all that it would seem. A worklight and a mirror helps a lot.
I rotate the engine over by putting the wagon in 5th gear, jacking up one rear wheel and slowly rotating the wheel by hand to get the piston to TDC mark - not easy, but it works. After doing 6 valves, you rotate the engine 360deg to do the other 6 valves. Just make sure you rotate the engine over in the direction it normally rotates.

$135.00 isn't bad considering the r/c gasket is $50.00 on its own
thats only roughly an hour labour which is about right
if you don't know what you are doing, it will take you a lot longer to do it
it's money well spent

Ah, but do they really change the gasket?
I got one for my GQ (Mav) years ago and never used it, as the original was a good neoprene seal which I was able to re-use every time with no oil leaks.
Mind you, they probably charged for it without actually replacing it....

just ask for the old rocker cover gasket back .... then u might get someone elses
