I've done a search and can't find the info, so I came to you all my learned friends.

I have the genuine patrol winchbar on my GU and have been told that a winch won't fit,------ what the!?
so I'm wondering if anyone has fitted a winch to theirs or if anyone has the nissan winch, I hear modifying the bullbar will result in non-compliance and issuses in an accident which makes me nervous.

I do have my technical support officer (hubby) home so fire away with all the info.

a winch bar that won't take a winch? C'mon...
Nissan's winch is a warn 9000lb. Other's have used those cheaper chineese ones from the likes of Repco etc. I don't think it will take a 10-12000lb warn or the 9500lb but will stand corrected.

yeah thought they were trying to suck more money out of me. It helps if I have hubby with me but when I'm on my own it's a different story.

Yep as above, also the X9 Superwinch will fit too, the factory Nissan and Cruiser bars are designed to fit a Warn and Superwinch as is ARB and TJM bars.

Was looking at the new GU last weekend and also was looking at getting bar and winch genuine. To fit the Warn winch into the genuine bar you need to purchase some adapting brackets and plates from Nissan to make it fit.

Hope this helps
Cheers

The Standard Nissan Winch bar is designed for a 9000lb Warn Winch and won't take any other winch without modifications. Some of these modifications (winch dependant) are rather simple though they will and can effect your Air Bag Compatibility.

I have the 12,000lb Ironman winch fitted in the standard Nissan winch bar. Fitted no problems. Bolts straight in.

I think the bar is amde to take the 9,000lb Warn which Nissan sell as an after market accessory but the Ironman and other similar winches are made to exactly the same dimensions. The Ironman 9,500 and 12,000 are also the same size.

Superwinch fits as well, they have the excact same mounts as Warn, they are also a Factory Toyota item, whether that's a bad thing or not i don't know but it has had no ill affects on my Landrover :-))>

TJM have a mounting plate that fits to the chassis and the bar and fairlead fits to the bar.

You reall can't go wrong with most of the popular brands Superwinch, Warn, Ironman, it's really a personal thing, some swear by the cheapies and some don't.

Your choices are limited to what fits. Another option could be the 9000lb Magnum/Tabor rebadged warn if you wanted something which is easy to get parts for. I saw repco had the chinese winches for $699 with a 3 yr warranty. That seems good.
But you have to ask yourself do your really need a winch? I put a 10k warn on and I haven't used it in anger as I have decent tyres on and find the Patrol extemely capable. I have to pull mine out for maintenace as a relay is playing up!

I had an 8000lb Warn (in another vehicle) which is very similar and didn't give me any trouble. One thing with the warn (magnum) you can get parts anywhere.

Same car,, same bar.....
Warn 9000,,, X9 superwinch.....both fit in.... warn 9500 doesnt...(too long)...
They go in upside down so be careful,, because the drainholes end up at the top...
If you dont block the holes and redrill new ones you will have a non working winch after basic water crossings...
Standard Nissan bar is not even friendly for mounting your control box...
I would DEFINATELY buy an ARB bar next time...

just did a quick dash to town and stopped for a few prices,

T-max 9500 $960 have never heard of it so not sure

warn xd 9000 $1725 nice but possibly a bit to $$$$

warn magnum 9k $1175 interesting

the xd9000 is a proven product however the other two are more in our price range. Anyone had any experience with the t-max or magnum?

Hi Cackles,
have seen & been there while a magnum winch. It was mounted on the front of a 100 series Toyo' cruiser & used to get it out of a big mud hole the driver thought looked inviting. The Magnum worked well.
Just be aware the Magnum is the poor man's Warn built to compete with other winches in the same price bracket.
With the cut down price comes cut down features i.e. only 2 solenoids (which matches it's competitors) as opposed to 4 solenoids in the Warn model.
Also plug-in for your control lead on the warn xd is on the top of the control box. where as plug-in for your control lead on the magnum is on the side of the control box, so access to it through the special cut out on the top of the Nissan steel bull-bar not really easily viable, so it's best to consider mounting the control box in plain view on top of the bull-bar.
Anyway some things to consider & while your at it, have a read of this article from 4wheelingoz.com, (they are a South Australian 4WD Club) Which winch do we choose it's very informative.

Cheers & Good Driving.

Thanks MadCrow,

you've brought up a few good points on what I should be looking for and the article has been bookmarked.
It's the same old problem money vs quality vs usage.

you're obviously from SA can I ask what area? just spent some time in Morgan with the outlaws.

Hi ya crackles,
I'm a "mexican, south of the new south wales boarder, i.e. victorian.
I came across that article in my research into which winch to get.
It looks like the warn has won.
Hope you had a good time in Morgan, S.A. like victoria (& the rest of Aussi land) has some mighty fine touring, adventuring places to visit and explore.

cheers

I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine that owns an ARB shop, it would appear that the magnum is the old style warn winch bought back to the market to compete with all the other budget winchs. All components are interchangable with newer models and in friends opinion a better winch because it's not as "high strung"

This is a bloke I know and trust for an unbiased opinion so I think I will go with the magnum.

sounds like your making an excellent choice.
I personally will carry a couple of spare solenoids for the winch cause they are easy to burn out through over heating & at about $40 each, it's a cheap backup when I may require it the most.
See if you can find a crew who do the installation & make the winch water proof at the same time. There's a crew here in vic land who do that plus set up an in cabin control for the winch, which is really handy.

enjoy the new toy!
