Been a rather new member but regular visitor I have noticed that there a quite a few people that generally only provide negative and relatively pointless input to questions and queries......I must admit it is a little disappointing to see a person looking for constructive info and all they get is CRAP......Rant Over....

Agree totally Teabag. Have been on this site since 2002 and reckon recently many posts are resembling those you see on Overlander. Hopefully all returns to normal soon as this forum is a great resource.

The negative ones are by far in the minority - I find the majority are helpful, wise, funny, generous with information and, always appreciated.

Welcome to society......

Just for your information, the posting that you followed up with a negative remark was in fact a sensible response, even if people don't want to hear it. i would assume that the OP knew that as an answer, just not what they were searching for in the posting intentions.

If you don't like to hear someones opinion, whether you believe they are correct or not, then i'm sorry that forums are not for everyone. Remember that there is a huge amount of people watching/listening to this forum from all over the place, each with different reasons......diversity is the word i am looking for. The challenge is to filter out what you don't believe is relevant (as it may be to others) and move on.

Some of these postings can be put down to boredom....the wanting to get out and explore this vast countryside of ours, yet they can't for various reasons.

The hardest part of this forum is the fact that emotion is not conveyed in any message, therefore people cannot understand where the poster is coming from in quite a few cases. I would suggest that we understand this concept and sometimes take a neutral approach to postings. I have been guilty of this, as it is hard to do sometimes.

Thanks for your posting.

Andrew

I will be one of the first to respect somebodies opinion as that is what makes this a great country is freedom to say what you think....My point is somebody asks a serious question and in a reply post there isn't an answer to that question....go figure....Yes, you are correct I think it is boredom and some people just love to go out of there way to wind people up....I take it all with a grain of salt but maybe it would be nice it people where a little more constructive in there posts....Yes, I know it won't happen but it would be nice......

Thanks teabag (?),

I sometimes find that the reason that there isn't a serious reply is due to the fact that the question isn't serious or that the question almost warrants the responses shown.....though this is not always the case and shouldn't be the norm.

I try to be constructive, though sometimes the standards slip......i just i'm just human :-)

There seems to be a lot of "background" information we are not aware of when seeing people winding each other up, and as such i think that some of this is deliberate. Fortunately most of it is nothing more than talk.....and should be taken with that grain of salt.

Teabag ,

I gather that you are referring to that inane comment from DIO regarding my request for info on a speed camera warning device that would warn you of school zones .

When I saw it , I wanted to give him some good advice , but I restrained myself .

I guess they just want to see their name in print .

Cheers ,

Sounds like you might have a problem with your school crossings. You'll have to excuse my 'inane comment' however in SA the school crossing lights ARE accompanied by yellow flashing lights which are probably intended to draw your attention to the fact that the crossing is 'active'. That's my understanding of 'the system'. Nothing inanae about that. If you happen to live somewhere that doesn't have such simple visual indicators, sorry, guess you need to lobby your road traffic authority (or whatever it is). Just becuase someone has an opinion differnet than yours doesn't mean that you are right or the other person is right. Just means a different opinion. You asked for advice - you got it. Perhaps you should avoid public forums if you can't cop it when you don't agree with it. Cheers.

DIO,

This wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular, it was just an observation I had resently observed. Now I'm not going to play the insult game at all. I never questioned your opinion, just didn't understand your point? To be honest, still don't. I also didn't ask for the advice I was just answering a question asked by a fellow user requesting help......I will leave it at that and yes, I do respect yours or anyone elses opinion.........

DIO, perhaps you need to examine SAs school crossings more closely, as none that I have ever seen are accompanied by flashing lights.

I think you are confusing school crossings with school zones, and some school crossings have flashing lights, but actual school zones are only 25kph when childeren are present, and this is 24/7.

Perhaps you should familiarise yourself with the road rules before you are booked for speeding.

I guess this is a negative post as well.

My presonal favourite is... "Do a search"

Coz it'd be too bloody hard to just spend 30 seconds typing some info up for them eh! haha!

My close second favourite is... "This topic's been done to death"

If you don't feel you have something valuable to add then don't add anything! Easy hey? Well you'd think so, yet here we are!

My personal favourites are rants over "Do a search" and "This topics been done to death", followed closely by "not another bloody tyre post" hehehehe nah not really.

I reckon that a qn asked is always an opportunity to learn something new, if you dont want to read the tyre post then don't, but I always do.

Anyhoo semi rant over

I agree with you too Teabag

I once posted a straight forward and reasonable question on this forum and whilst I had several reasoned and constructive responses, I also copped several totally negative and somewhat insulting ones.

I put it down to the fact that some forumites are bored and don't have a life and they get a buzz out of stirring people up.

The only response is to ignore them.

Agreed Teabag and thanks for posting on this, it is something I thought of recently when the bloke with chassis cracks got an useless and unnecessary resonse from acdc.

It is disappointing and I think it discourages newer members and visitors from posting as they may not have developed as thick a skin as those of us who have been around a while.

It does seem to be the same usernames associated with most of these posts so they are easy to ignore.

I think there is a difference between useless negative responses and bad news that the poster may not want to hear. If it's usefull bad news, delivered in context then it's OK IMHO.

My Grandmother used to say a couple of things;"If you don't have anything usefull to say, don't say anything at all" and "engage your barain before opening your mouth". Some of the posters around here may be well advised!

OT, my dad had a similar favourite saying. Something like:
'If you can't say something good, at least say something sensible. If you can't do that, then have the sense to say nothing'.

Think your Grandmother and my dad would have enjoyed each others company. Perhaps they are. (assuming your grandmother has passed on as my dad has).

Hi Teabag.

I think negatives come with the territory on forums generally. No different here. My personal observations are that they seem to be limited to the few who probably think they are being funny.

I just skip over them and get to the meat of the replies.

I must say that, for me, this forum is an invaluable resource and I have personally been saved many hundreds (thousands??) of dollars with the advice and assistance I have received here over the years. Even with the few mental geldings around, the majority are freely giving of their help and advice, and I certainly appreciate that. Don't let them put you off.

Cheers

I agree in part, if I have a query the respones are always varied. Some are to the point others are useless but funny. The banter, joking, leg pulling etc tend to make one feel accepted by the crew and I dare say many friendships have been forged due to this site. I enjoy poking around the site as I learn something new, have a laugh and at times offer my opinion on various issues. The only times I get annoyed is when arrogance and nastiness creeps in, this tends to belittle people and is not a virtue I admire. .................nissnut.

what a load of carp! TeaBag.......... those and other responses such as those do nothing but show up the ignorance of the responder. No-one knows what the asker knows or is chasing and as I said up above every question is a chance to find out something new or update on the latest feature/design Waeco/Engel Cooper/BFG/Uniroyal Toyota/Nissan debate.

I have seen and almost rankled with a burst of flammatory response but backed off, see above for reason why, self knowledge is nice.

One thing I know for a fact is that this site is about as deviod of this stuff as a public forum can be and full of people who will respond with "dont want to readit dont reply" commonsense, and anything out of hand is moderated, effectively.

When ya down here one day experienceing cluody weather Teabag, call by for a cuppa and we can catch up.!

Yes, but a little banter doesn't hurt as long as the receiver understands it is a little banter....Such as the Nissan, Tojo games which I am an offender of though generally follow with a TIC or heheh so that they know I'm only joking. Typing this into a computer for somebody to read make it hard to put comments in context....It was just something I noticed and was wondering if others had noticed this as well?

Great intestinal fortitude, I'm impressed....This is sometimes my problem, I don't bit my tongue. One of the first things I learned as an instructor was:
If one does not know the answer, it is not a stupid question!, and another: Asking dumb questions is easier than correcting dumb mistakes!

There are a lot of people out there who know it all so please indulge those of us who do not!

Sometimes the search of the archives does not give the appropriate answer or the archive may be too old to give current information!

Yes, indeed. Sometimes I think ppl have had too many drinkies and then get on the keyboard.

I was rather surprised and angered to see two long time contributors to this forum going at each other this week, and talking it up by saying "you wait till I meet you" and stuff like "any time buddy, bring it on" OK, there may some hystory between them that I am not aware of, but it was dissapointing none the less.

Lukily that post was moderated and the offending material was removed.

Having said that, I have had a few ding dongs with one or two ppl on here, and more than a few with truckster, but I do not hold a grudge and will readily read and reply to his posts or ask him a question if I think he may know what I'm after.

I must admit, it does get kinda quiet around here when he is on hols.
