Why are Mitsubishi sales down so much in comparison to the opposition?

Through out their entire range they have some very nice well built vehicles, with warranties hard to beat. As far as reliability goes with their diesels they could teach others a thing or two, as far as that goes!. ITs a shame when company's as such here in oz , struggle to survive with the ever increasing competition.

cheers Axle.

'Why are Mitsubishi sales down so much in comparison to the opposition'
Probably cos most people don't want to buy a vehicle from someone who is not likely to be here for much longer.

Spot on - the best thing that Mitsubishi could do is what Nissan did and simply come out and announce cars will no longer be made in Australia and in future they will all be imported. It is the uncertainty that is the killer because people know there may be an issue on resale - eg Magna/380 would no longer be sold and be worth next to nothing in future - all rubs off off on other models even those that are currently imported. The 380 has turened out to be a dud so Mitsubishi should just import cars like Nissan did.

I believe that ego rather than practical thinking determines most people vehicle purchases.
Toyota and Nissan have done a good job of promoting the ego part and have got away with it.
I was a Toyota man but moved away when they didn't keep up. Now drive a Pajero.

The pajero has been mitsubishis most sucessfull seller in oz i think, they have always proven to be a good vehicle , the early magnas created a stigma which has followed right through to the current 380. Yet the sigma was australias best selling 4cyl sedan for about 5yrs..

not sure about the ego thing ..
with and ego problem you by an X5 or an ML and not a miesly jap car ...
with a real ego you just don't care about any marketing hype or others opinion ..
I think that Toyota and Nissan image is highly exagerated .. just because so
many people buy it does not mean it's good .. a bit like 1000 flies can't be wrong .. but they still sit on chit ..
have fun

Axle,
After many years of buying second hand cars, which I may add have served me well and are good value for money, we decieded to buy ourselves a new Pajero DiD Exceed. Beautiful vehicle, pulls the van well and handeles like a car. The only fault that I can growl about is the Sattellite Navigation system. When I bought the car i was told that I could upgrade the system at no cost to me. I, and many others have now had trouble with the system 'freezing' and to slow to update as you are driving along. Many complaints, not only by me but others, ( check out the forum on www.pajeroclub.com.au and look at the responses from MMA ) go unheard. The response is pathetic to say the least. You pay the big dollars for a vehicle and get no positive follow up to solve the problem. Todate, despite many compliants from angry Pajeo owners, MMa has not come forward with a viable solution at all.
To copy a quote from another angry Pajero Exceed owner :-

Just as Mitsubishi has a responsibility to make spare parts available both
under warranty and for purchase - so Mitsubishi also has a responsibility to
make available and supply upgrades for the GPS system supplied with the
Exceed.

Mistubishi used the GPS as a selling point for the Exceed and it was made
clear at point of sale that map upgrades would be available.

After all, who would be silly enough to pay several thousands of dollars if
the gps was not upgradable.

Your own sales brochures show that although it is not just a gps system the
gps plays a large part in the attractiveness of the system .

I expect Mitsubishi to front up on this matter.

Any wonder that sales have fallen if this is the warrenty applied by MMA to solve a problem that has caused so much pain in Pajero owners.

Other than that the Pajero DiD is a fine 4WD. Just wish the warrenty didn.t let them down.

I also have a Pajero DiD exceed with the Nav system bloody hard to use, half the roads an't even on the system, some of the roads around home had name changes about 15 to 20 years ago but still have the old names on the system makes it hard.
Great 4by but a bleep poor Nav system certainly would not of parted with the dollars if I had known.
The 380 looks OK but if Mitsubishi pack up , the car's won't be worth $hit.

The 380 is the only Mitsubishi vehicle assembled in Australia, all others in the cars and commercials in the range are imported.

so if mits in aust, pack up ,its only 380 owners that would feel the crunch with values (not being sarcastic) but you would think the imports would continue, or am i on the wrong track hear.

Bit difficult to say Axle, Datsun/Nissan went through the same conundrum some years ago when they stopped making the Bluebird and then imported everthing.
Doesn't seem to have affected thier sales unless they have a dog of a model in their range and then you can't give em away. Remember the next model Bluebird. ( Smooth rounded one, not like the Aussie-made square shape one) A real flop. It may have been quite a good car, I don't know, but it didn't sell.
I guess it's just having the right mix of vehicles in the range.
I guess if we had an answer to Mitsubishis problem, we would be on a very livable salary at Tonsley Park.
Maybe if they had Toyotas advertising budget it would help a lot.
I think Toyotas budget would be similar to Coca Colas advertising buget.
Look where they are both positioned on the sales ladders.
My thoughts only

Hi

It is a pity that Mitsubishi is not doing well. I go out in the scrub with guys in Pajeros and they do well, they go all the places we want to go with no fuss.

I hope they stay around and give Nissan and Toyota some stiff competition. If I was buying another vehicle now I would seriously look at a Pajero td.

Cheers
Phil

sorry to say this but pajeros & tritons do not stand up to the abuse that toyota l/c & nissan patrols do in rural use . parts are sometimes a real pain in the ass in more isolated areas to obtain. nearly all outback towns will have some stock for the humble l/c & to a lesser extent the patrol (eg common water pumps, belts wheel studs & the like ). how many pageros have you seen with 500,000 km on the clock & still going strong on the original eng? not any i bet . i have seen quite a few toyotas & a few nissans do this but never a mitsie. As a mechanic i cringe when somebody says pagero not my favourite vehicle to work on .

I have worked in the coal mining industry for 24 years now and every working day I drive a 4wd ute be it Nissan or Toyota. The mechanical downtime on the Toyota's has got to a stage that there is a vehicle shortage at times. The Nissan 4.2 diesel is a far better machine to ride in and has less downtime than Toyota. There are 6 Pajero wagons in the fleet, older ones ( they tend to keep them longer now) and they are the preferred vehicle to ride in on the minesite. Downtime is less than the Toyota and the Nissan although the Nissan is not far behind. 4.2D Nissans, good work horse.Toyota would not be such a force in the mining ndustry if it did not offer such good deals to the mining companies.
PS After all that I bought a Pajero DiD wagon to pull my 2340kg van.

Many jobs will go in SA when Mitsi leave. Chrysler and Mitsi have always been behind Holden Ford and Toyota.

As a company car my old man always chose Magnas as they were quiet and smooth. Now ford offers better deals for fleets.

That's where a lot of sales come from, fleet. Those bean counters go for good deals rather than good cars. Mitsi aren't in the position to offer good fleet deals, they simply can't match the stronger companies.

We had a diesel Triton flat-top..Magic rig..Took it camping in the Carnarvons (the other end, away from Injune.More remote.Quiter)..Our manageress was driving it and another lady in a Commondoor SS howled straight thru a give way sign.Got wiped out.Tilt-trayed away.Drove the Triton home with just a slightly bent alum TJM steel bull bar.Had to do a quick 120kph trip Bris (1000kms) to get a computor fixed for our biz..Mitsubishi Triton was magic to drive..Now driving a 4x2 Triton gasoline ute.Took it to Birdsville for Anzac day year before last through Yaraka,Windorah etc..No trouble except bit low on rocky areas..Sat in a new Triton with solid steel flat-top tray (Made in Gracemere,Rocky) on Saturday and will probably saddle up for one of them..Like the quality finish, durability of Mitsubishi (Yes,we have had each of the majors..Were ok) Our experience..Mitsubishi seriously underated.(Thanks to the quality of the TJM bar, when insurance replaced it,I modded it to fit my '94 Rocsta.Perfect!)!MPG:7!
