Hi, this is my first post here and straight away I could do with some advice.
I have just bought my first 4wd (Triton Dual Cab) and I am very keen to try out down a track, I am a complete beginner other than hiring a 4wd a few years ago to drive around Fraser.
Anyway how easy a track is the Cooloola Way, is there any tricky sections and also has anyone got any advice on the area? We are going north from Nambour and heading for Rainbow beach, we are only staying the one night but as we live in Nambour we may make the trip again several times.
I plan on researching 4wd driving more and maybe even join a club if I can find one local, but for now and this trip I mention, do I need any special equipment?

Cheers,

Neil

Neil,

May I suggest that you invest in some quality recovery gear. ie snatch strap, rated shackles, long handle shovel etc.
Without doing a basic 4wd familiarisation course, find someone that has some experience to go with you to show you the basics in 4wdriving.
I don't know the area that you have mentioned so hopefully someone else may be able to answer the other part of your post.

Cheers Kev

Pask.
Mate, if you have driven Fraser , then Cooloola way is a sinch, it's just a dirt road, a bit rough in some places and if there has been alot of rain it can get slippery in some places. Driven it heaps of times , best short cut to rainbow beach. I live in Caloundra , if you want to go 4wding just contact me at rletchford@icarpool.com.au
Regards Ross
ps we will be camping at inskip point 1st - 4th Dec and going through that way.

2nd that. Especially the first. If in doubt, don't. You have plenty of time to learn.
But the Cooloola way should be fine subject to heavy rain.

Hi Neil
Why not take the barge at Tewantin and do the run up the beach to Double Island Point and then either drive up to Rabow via Rainbow Beach or take the Fresh Water track through to Rainbow.

Thanks for the replies, there was some good advice there and it gave me the confidence to go ahead with the trip. We drove to Rainbow Beach along the Cooloola Way, it was straight forword enough just a rough gravel road, then later we went along the Freshwater Track, had a picnic at the bottom then returned using the same track the other way, this reminded me of Fraser Island a little bit.
The next day we had storms, after some advice from the locals we went along the beach and over the Leisha Track and up to the Cherry Venture, we then went to Double Island Point and then back.
All in all it was great trip, it was short but gave me a little bit of experience.

The main reason for buying a 4wd vehicle was to help my photography and allow me to get to more out of the way locations, here is a few examples of my work from the trip.
