I am trying to decide whether to go with the Safari Turbo or the AXT on my 98 GXL 100 series auto diesel. The money is about the same and up here in cairns these seem to be the only two options. Has anybody got some advice on which is best?
cheers Geoff

G'day Mayesy, yeah I have been considering a turbo for my Patrol, looked at Denco Turbo units(they advertise on here I think) and a few others........I'm not fitting it myself, my fitter has advised me to consider a second hand one, if possible.......not sure on that one but I'm open to thinking about it

G'day Geoff,

As to which is best, I have no idea.. Any difference would probably be accounted for by the way each is fitted, & how the engine is tuned after fitting...

However, when I had my (previous vehicle) GQ TD42 turboed several yrs ago, I went with the AXT (Garrett) based largely on the credentials of the bloke who fitted it.. To this day I have no reason to regret the choice..

When I bought my (current) GU 7½ yrs ago, I sold the GQ to my FIL who still owns it and to date has had no problems whatsoever with turbo or engine...

If I was buying an aftermarket turbo tomorrow, I'd have no hesitation in going with the AXT again... (YMMV)..

I would think about the plumbing. Get some pics of all the brands your interested in buying. Take a look at how the underbonnet setup is. Some are messy and some are neat. Remembering that eventually you will have to work under the bonet so look for the one which is fitted the neatest. Look closely at how the flex hose connects to the air box. Some are pretty flimsy and are NOT sealed properly ( thats a problem id doing river crossings).

Most of the brands available are good as far as the turbo goes, what is the critical part here is how they set everything up. Its a hell of a lot of money so do your homework first and ask questions in your local area.

Maysey,
I have an AXT Turbo fitted to my 80 Series. I chose this turbo because the people at AXT in Melbourne ( Dandenong) were the ones who were the most prepared to sit down with me and explain everything in a very thorough and patient fashion. Mine has been up and running for about 18 months now without a problem so far. I run with about 8 pound boost and still have the standard exhaust. I reckon I would have been just as happy with a safari turbo. I could see very little difference at the time I made my decisions. My overall feeling about having the turbo is that it is much better than pre turbo, not quite as good as I expected, and not as good as the factory fitted ones in the 100 Series.

What I think is most important are the people who fit the turbo. They need to know their stuff.

Maysey,

I fitted an AXT turbo kit to a 2H Diesel in a 40 series Cruiser SWB 4 years ago and couldn't speak more highly of the AXT kit or the back-up support from AXT. The vehicle is still going strong today and runs 10psi boost. The kit made a huge difference to the performance of the vehicle.

I am also considering fitting an AXT kit to my current GQ Patrol TD42.

I haven't heard much about the Safari ones but seem to be a reputable.

Just as a sideline comment, I had a Safari stage one upgrade done on my GU from new and when it started to run hot neither the dealer nor the Safari agent wanted anything to do with the truck. So my opinions of the after sales service of Safari are not very high.

Cheers Trevor.
