Hi,

I'm currently looking at a Auto HJ61RG Sahara 12HT.
I suspect it is a grey import because it has a 24 volt system.
Also it has lots of add ons, like a retro roo bar with a PTO winch.

It has done 140,000 km but who knows with these cars

How much is this car worth.
It is is very good condition and I want to buy it. It is in my budget.

Also do these cars give anyone grief.

Also how can you identify these grey imports. It does have forigen stickers all over the dash on how to use the sticks. Do the Aussie imports have english stickers?

Thanks in Advance
Craig

Instead of a silver compliance plate under the bonnet it should have a green one if it is a import.

Hi,

How much do you think this car is worth as a grey import.

He is quoting carpoint.com.au prices as base.

Also I have learnt since my last email that the cooling system is under spec.

I wouldn't be paying the carpoint price for an import.
140k sounds a bit light-on for a 60-series - they stopped making them about 1990.
And there's the rust issue.
just my two bob's worth..

Hi Craig,

I've had one of these for a couple of years. Yes it is a grey import if it runs a 24v electrical system. They are called the NATO pack - winch, big mother hook on the back, 24v and they often had heaps of cool extras not available/common in Aus. Some have cable diff locks.

How much is it worth? I think I paid around $16 for mine a couple of years ago with 91k on the clock. I'd imagine $12k for one with a few more kms and now they are a bit older. They are 1989 models generally.

Has it been used in Aus or is it a fresh import?

Issues to look for.

Rust in the chassis down the back from wheel spray. Rust in the chassis anywhere really. My body is perfect, he says modestly.... but the chassis is worse for wear. I had a bit of bad luck with things such as the clutch needing replacing, springs, and leaking gaskets on the gearbox transfer case, front hub seals, new tyres.

The 24v system provides it's own challenges, but these are not insurmountable and you get to learn lots. It's not so much the 24v that is an issue, it's the fact we choose to run 12v stuff that leads to the learning curve.

Craig what you are buying is a 60 series Landcruiser with a highly regarded turbo engine and auto in good condition and with lots of extras. The only real difference is the 24v electrics. Contrary to hearsay, which you get a bit of on this site, I have not come across ANY issues with insurance, licensing, parts in WA.

The Jap language stickers are an interesting side light, that once you've used the thing once you pay no attention to anyway. Does anyone pay attention to English stickers?

Given they are a 60 series, they are well known all over Aus, well regarded as an offroad tourer, and as someone said to me soon after I bought it, a great way to get into 4WD. I really enjoy mine.

Craig,

Unless the radiator has been replaced with an inferior unit, the ones that come with them are standard as far as I know. Cooling has never been an issue, and I've done long runs in the Pilbara.

Hi,

Thanks for the great reply

This is 1989 model

I'm buying this car to go up to the Pilbra next year. I have a budget and this car has caught my eye.

I'm looking for a Auto, 4 litre factory fitted turbo. This is the only one that fits the bill.

The PTO and power windows are a bonus

This is not a fresh import. The guy has owned it for 2 years.

I don't know about this cooling issue. May have to do some work here.

There are some minor problems that add up to around $500.

Also the suspension needs some work

So do you still rekon $12k

Craig

Well, what does he want for it?? If it fits your requirements, the choice is yours how much you pay.

See what other 60 series are going for in Quokka etc, then add a bit for all the fruit. It might be an idea to get an independent check done on it - such as the RAC.

A new suspension - set of four springs no shockies, cost me $1300 fitted - happened to be the day before I headed off across to Alice with a fully loaded vehicle and found I had 10mm between the axle and the bump rubbers :-(
If other suspension work is needed such as shockies, factor that into the price. If steering bushes need doing, I'd be wondering what work it's been up to. Lie underneath for a while and see what you can figure out how it's been treated. But frankly, these are pretty tough vehicles I've discovered.

All I can say is that you are buying a solid 4WD and if it's in good nick and suits your purpose, you'll keep it for a long time and have lots of good service from it. $8 grand, $12 grand, $16 grand .... I don't know. Sorry :-) Up to you.

I would definitly have thought more in the region of 6-8k, 12 grand will get you an 80 series

G'day ozcraig, I was just doing a search on the HJ61 turbo diesel and I saw a Sahara on ebay and he only wants $18000 for it. 108K I think was the Kms, but $18000!!
Don't like his chances much.
There are others ranging from about $7000 I think but not 12HT, and not necessarily Sahara.
Not sure I would put a lot of faith in the Kms on the clock, but if the car gets a good mechanical report, go for it.
My Sahara is 20 years old this year and has been super reliable and the 12HT is really quite economical.

Hi there, you have recieved good advice so far, the only issues you may encounter is trying to get parts for the 24v system in the event of an electrical failure. That said these things are near bulletproof, they are tough as nails, go everywhere that later models will go and won't tear a big hole in your wallet.
Spend the money on quality suspension, shocks etc. load your vehicle up see how it sits & handles. I had my (new) rear springs reset and another leaf added after a big trip, found it was too soft and bottoming out.
Invest in some rear shock savers. I made a set for our trip around Oz and these things copped a flogging, the shocks would have certainly failed if not for the covers.
A three inch exhaust helps these engines too.
If you like it and it checks out ok, fits the budget then go for it, you will love it!
