Gday
Well ,, being flat out at work,i decided to make myself a tow hook for the towing of other people,, My little boy had given me the black hooky bit for my birthday, not long back, and it was time to make it work.
I went up the street and purchased 300mm of RHS 50mmx 5mm and drilled a few holes . The bolts supplied seem'd ok , so in they went. Just a coat of black and it looks like a new one
I just thought that you would all like to know what i have been doing at work,,but don't tell Darling .

I must go and pack my bags ,as it is time for another weekend away....Noojee area this coming weekend...A nice roast and a few vegies out in the bush, and a coldy or two......

Nah! not at the moment.

Thanks for the offer though.

Actually you might be able to interest Roachie or Truckster with the offer.

Don't miss going to the toolshed at Noojee. Just over the bridge in town. Great meals for not much cash and a cosy fire if it's cold.

Muzbry,
That sounds like a good idea. I've got a spare tow hook that I could do this with and it will be cheaper than a commercial welded hook. I also prefer strong bolts to welds for these types of applications.
At the moment I'm just using the holding pin thingy for rear recoveries and I'm worried that one day it will bend and get "locked in".

Let us know when you've used it and how it went.

It's one of the things that you hope you never have to use,,but better to have than using the tow ball or the pin thingy ,as you put it..

Play it a bit safe at all times,,much more fun than being hurt..

Gday Disco123
Well we went away last weekend to test the hook, and i was the only one that came close to needing it, as i hadn't set my tyre pressures ..i became a little stuck on a slippery part of the road, but all worked out well with a little more right foot and the tyres down from highway pressure.
The hook is still sitting on the back of the wagon ,dirty as we are not aloud to wash them until it rains ..The hook does not poke out far enough to bash the shins on, which is good..My brother bashed his shin on a tow bar the other day and woke the kid up that was asleep in the car, The lady was bleep off with him as she had only just gotten the little tacker off to sleep..You should see his shin, huge
bump and a big hole ..

Have a nice day Disco

Gday Navaraman (patrolmanpat)
I new this would come up..so here goes.........The hook has a 10000lbs mark stamped to the side (4545 kg approx) and bolts were supplied with the hook (grade 5 ) so after all that was done it came down to the size if the RHS (rolled hollow section) I measured the size of the tube that the tow hook slides into (5mm) and the tow tube that was supplied by Toyota (4mm) and went for the 5mm to make the tow hook complete. The only other thing is the pin that holds the hook onto the towbar, i used the one supplied with the tow bar.If you need more info, just ask.
