any advice ? I have an 80 series GXL petrol auto done 240,000 and is now getting a little sluggish and using more oil than I'd like, puffing smoke on startup.
I suspect the motor and possibly gearbox may need a birthday - anyone headed down this path care to share their
views.
regular servicing, oil changes etc, no rust, OME a couple of years ago, it's in good shape.
cheers

Which motor is it.? It could possibly be simply valve stems oil seals. They can have good compression but still blow smoke if the valve stem seals need doing. Fairly simple job. My 22r motor is just starting to blow some smoke on start up at 203000k. But I know these motors are good for 400000ks which most toyota motors will do

Yeah mate, I second that. 240000 klicks is not the end of the motor provided you have kept the maintenance up in the past and used decent filters and oil. Valve stem seals would be my guess too. Toyota engines are pretty expensive to rebuild, so get yourself a honest mechanic before you waste a lot of dough for nothing...
Just my two cents worth.

The auto trans are usually good for 400k also if they are serviced regularly.

Before you do anything, these motors can clog up the PCV valve and that allows oil to get into the inlet, they are cheaper than a head service (700 for that and 700 for the bolts and gaskets.)
Before i did even that, i would do a compression check to determine if one pot is down, and take it from there...if the motor has ever overheated, it will have bad valve seals...even if the rad has been smashed in a wreck, the seals will have burnt.

Edbid,
Definetly check the pcv valve as mentioned by an earlier reply.
Mine has 245000k on the clock and LPG. It doesn't use any oil at all and I put that down to checking/adjusting valves every 60000k and using Penrite HPR30 engine oil and genuine Toyota Oil filters since I bought it with 28000k on the clock. With the oil filter the larger one is better(Part No 15600-41010) as it holds more oil in it for initial startup. Also, when starting cold make sure you let it warm up for at least 30 seconds before moving off. With the LPG what I do is always start on Petrol and after 10 or so minutes switch to LPG and always make sure it is running on Petrol when turned off at night. Lastly, a foam air filter (finer or uni) makes a heap of difference.
