Can synthetic oil be used on a turbo diesel engine. I'm runnining a new 100 series TD cruiser and the 5000km service is coming up. Are there any advantages ? or should I just stick with what Toyota gives me ?

Hi Glenn
If its new I would do whatever Toyota tell me until out of warranty otherwise I am sure they would deny warranty on an engine claim

Unfortunately I agree with Trekkie. However, I am running my 2000 GU 4.2TD on Amsoil 5W30 100% synthetic and with a bypass filter system. I changed my oil after having done 33,000klm on the 1st lot (which was actually 15w40) and it was still quite okay. The dealer was astounded that I would have 'bothered' to get rid of the perfectly good oil that he said would be good for 80,000klm.
So, now I'm running the 5w30 and have done about 15,000klm so far.
I'm not just relying on blind faith either. I've been sending off a sample of my oil to Castrol for analysis every so often......it always comes back with a clean bill of health!!!! I'm happy.
See www.amsoil.com
Cheers
Roachie

Of course you can run synthetic !!!
Toyota will have a list of oils that comply with their specs.
A few of the new "high" tech diesels specify synthetic only.
You can stick to whatever toyota gives you, but that might be different from dealer to dealer ? If Toyota have a "Toyota" brand oil it is probably made by x brand oil company anyhow ?

I did the same with pajero when new.
Ran it on the oil used by Mitsu until running in had happened, about 20,000k, then changed to my preferred oil.
Looked at the specs and chose an oil, then talked it over with the service manager. I took my own oil in from then on for them to use. Now some on this
forum would say that it was a waste of time, it most probably got put in the managers or chief mechanics car.

Running synthetic is money down the drain on the 1HD-FTE, unless you do what Roachie does.
Your Toyota dealer will use a multi-purpose oil that they can put in a range of vehicles. It will most likely be a CF grade. Oil change intervals are 10,000k on your diesel anyway, unless you are using it in tough conditions. I also have a 1HD-FTE, but admit to changing oil every 5-7,000k because I feel better :-))
IMO, just stick with what they give you. Your engine will not wear out during your ownership!

Synthetic is superior in every respect... except price.
It would never invalidate your warranty as long as it meets Toyota specs (which it would pass with flying colours.)
It's all a question of dollars.....
I would rather run synthetic any day if I had a choice.
I run synthetic on everything I own (mower, cars, generator etc.) and have never looked back.

Most of the oil makers have fully synthetic (FS) oils aimed the the long haul trucking industry - extended drain intervals - along with high spec filters in the mix , it must be a good idea (those truckers have to do their sums carefully). If the FS specs match those in the cars manual, price should be the only barrier. I use FS in my gbox and trans case. Re trucks - I have a rello in the game - when his new truck goes in for a service they check the oil - if in spec it stays there (but it goes at 80,000 anyway) - the situation covered by Roachie above. I dabbled with Catrol Dynamax 10-W40 FS for awhile (20L drums) - about the same price as the Magnatec (5L packs) I now use.

Thanks Darian,
The cost doesn't bother me too much, just want the best as I plan to have the bus for a while and keep the moving parts in the best condition I can.
Thanks for the info.
Cheers,
Glenn
