Hello everyone,

Has anyone stayed at either Lake Liddell or Lake Glenbawn (near Musselbrook and Scone in Upper Hunter Valley)

I am looking to get away in the van over the Christmas/New Year break and because of the congestion on the coast at that time of the year, we were thinking of going inland, and at that time of the year it would be good to be near some water.

There is limited information on both these areas on the net other than to say that there is camping/kiosk/etc etc.

Anyones experience would be appreciated.

Hi there Cruiser, we havn't stayed at Glenbawn yet, but are going to in the near future. My good mate that I bass fish with has, and the camping and bass fishing was superb from his remarks.Apparenlty you can camp basically right near the water in the lake, so the boat can be left in the water right near camp.

Stayed at Glenbawn a few years ago during summer make sure you camp near some trees as it was bloody hot when i was there, camp on the eastern side of the trees so you avoid the afternoon sun if you are camping around the lake.
There is a camping area with powered sites from memory and a kiosk with basics.
Some big bass a yellow belly to be caught there. cheers

Lake Liddel is a fairly small lake that is used to store water for the power stations in that area. There are a few carp in it and some birdlife and thats about it. The last time I was out there it did not have a camping ground etc. Although you could fish. ( Personally I would not go there).

Lake glenbawn is a great place to camp with excellent facilities on the western side of the dam. It does get congested at christmas, but not like the congestion at, say the Entrance. There is a caravan pk there although it is very small, most people put their vans and tents etc not far from the boat ramp and amenities block. These are unpowered sites.

The fishing at Glenbawn is second to none. Yellow belly, bass and catfish. No carp or redfin.

If you decide to go give me a yell and i can show you a few fishing spots.

Scone is only about 20 minutes away.

Regards Bob

As previously advised you can Liddell a miss. It's good for a pee break and that's about it.

Love Glenbawn! Doubt you would stand a chance of getting a powered site this late in the season so it will be "free camping" on the western shore.

As mentioned, make the effort to get on the right (eastern ) side of a tree, better yet take your own tree with you. My experience of inland impoundment fishing has been that that can be murderously hot and oppressive at times. Conversely we stayed at Glenbawn in August and my wife used a knife to get the cooking oil out of the bottle.

Camping on the western shore can be nice as you basically pick your own site, as close or as far away from the amenities as you wish.

There is a grocery/takeaway food/coffee shop at what appeared to me to be the usual over the top prices. However you can take a pleasant drive into Scone for top up groceries. Aberdeen is probably as close but watch out for psychotic defactos with skinning knives.

The amenities blocks were first rate but are insufficient to cater for a crowded park so be prepared to shower super early morning or afternoon to avoid ques and tepid water.

If your a fishing person, especially if you target bass then forget all the above and just go, you can always steal food from babies and infants and only dirty people shower anyway.

We were at Glenbawn in early December a couple of years back. It is a good spot but you can get some summer wind storms up there so make sure you are well battened down.

Thanks for all the replies.

It seems unanimous that if we are going to go to that area, then it will be to Lake Glenbawn.

Now all we have to do is hope we can get into the caravan park at Lake Macquarie near the sons inlaws for a few days including christmas day.

Don't forget Lake St Clair (Glennies Creek Dam). Good fishing also, but it would be worth a check about the ramp at the moment. People have still been able to launch boats but as i understand the ramp is high and dry. Just a thought..

We camped at Glenbawn years ago and its great. However, all the NSW dams suffer from a shortage of water - Glenbawn is 25% right now. See Site Link for dam levels.

We rather like New England Park or Wollomombi NP for getting away from the crowds and heat in summer.

Were staying in Armidale and drove up there last week and the waterfalls were pouring with H2O after some good rains and great thunderstorms!

Another thought
