Does anyone know what is required? I am sure it is not as easy as chucking an annex on the back of a ute and a mattress.
It is just that it gets around regestring a ute as a comercial vehicle which is cheaper

Davoe
When I went to get my coaster re registered as a mobile caravan I was told that as such there is no hard and fast rules. I was told by some that I needed a bed, a fridge and a stove. Others told me I needed a fridge, stove and a sink and yet others told me I needed a sink, a bed and a fridge lol.
In the end I hade a kitchen cupboard, the skeleton of the overhead cupboards and a bed.
When the inspector looked at it he said he would have to ring
perth for some clarification. When he got off the phone he mumbled something along the lines of they were a bunch of D***heads. But they told him to licence it as a mobile caravan.
Where this leaves you Im not sure. I would sugest you find out who does the inspection and ask them directly as he will have the final say.
Good Luck

Hi Davoe,
I looked into doing this in SA. They said I needed to have a bed permanently in there. I also would need to have it weighed when its totally packed with full tanks, for them to calculate the rego fee. Because of that they couldn't tell me how much I'd save. All got too hard for me, so I still pay the $850 per year as a commercial vehicle.
Cheers
phil

Ta my missus is going to register her hilux from Vic to WA and the thought just crossed my mind as i have owned 2 campervans 1 SA registered nissan E20 and 1 cruiser camper in WA. Both were registered as Mob caravans and it just cost me the standard 4cyl rego for the E20 and 6cyl for the cruiser.
Doesnt really sound feasable though

It needs to have sleeping accomodation and a proper
seat with
seat belt for each sleeping berth. It needs a left side opening door and if LPG is fitted it needs a current notice of compliance from a lic gas fitter plus all the safety stickers/warnings for each appliance fridge/stove , etc. The gas bottle must be stored and vented outside the vehicle body. Generally the vehicle must be fitted out so it can only be used for that purpose and you would need more than a
camp stretcher chucked in the back of a panel van:-) If you have any more questions ring the DPI conatct centre 13 11 56 and ask to be put through to a vehicle examiner. They are very helpful and would rather tell you what the rules are before you present the vehicle for examination rather than after you have spent time and money carrying out modifications that may not comply which causes unecessary complications to both parties.
