Me thinks that Aus is getting set up for something??????
WA is getting dragged kicking and screaming (
well some of us are) into daylight saving, and now it looks like NT is getting dragged into and ready for the yet to be introduced 'national road rules'.
Look on the positive side, with all the new revenue coming in you may get tax cuts up there. HA HA HA
Cheers

Hi Gaz
I wish we had the same open road speed limits here in SA. No one can complain with a 130kph limit. They tried to have that as the open road limit north of
Port Augusta and the West Coast a few years back, but it was knocked on the head.
Give it time and you will find that the limit will be lowered in the NT
Make the most of it.
Cheers
Stephen

About time NT was started to be brought into line with other states. If you dont speed and endager the lives of others you have nothing to fear. The fines should be 3 times not just doubled. Drink driving over .05 should be immediate disqualification and impounded vehicle for 6 months.
Responsible drivers would have no issue about the new speed limits or the increase in fines. NT to date has had a major issue with deaths on the roads and these speed limits are still to high and should have been introduced years ago.

Over 80% of deaths in the NT occurred on roads with speed limits already posted (rural roads) how is a speed limit on the highway going to reduce that ????

majority of NT dwellers support the moves and would like more regulation
the replies prove what a mob of hoons louts and ignorance and bat attitude to other road users 4wd drivers display
why should we care about the fines as they will never effect us.

Its not so much the speed restrictions that concerns me its the knee jerk reaction the gov takes that is nowhere near fixing the problem.

I can't see a prolem with those laws, apart from the speed limits on the Sturat highway. The government admit themselves that most severe accidents are caused by alcohol and fatigue, not fast driving on the highway.
I don't think a driver should get a whopping fine for doing 140 kmh on the Stuart highway, if it's safe to do so.
When I was in Alice hospital Emergency department the only car accidents that came in were drunk Aboriginal drivers and tourists driving at night that either hit an animal or ran off the road swerving animals. Not one from driving fast on the Stuart. Maybe they should fine people for driving on the highway at night?
My 2 cents that I think won't make any diffeence at all.

Have a female friend who only smokes cigs with the warning about danger to pregnancy. Therefore, not being pregnant, OK to smoke them.
Interesting idea :o)

Governments everywhere are chanting the same mantra "Speed Kills"!
This was dreamed up by some insignificant uni in an insignificant state together with some very dodgy statistics such as "every 5klms over the speed limit doubles the chances of killing someone" or some such rubbish.
The cause of most deaths and injuries on the roads are inappropriate speed for road and traffic conditions, together with the total stupidity, incompetence and lack of consideration shown by many road users to others.
But policing these is a bit too hard for police drivers who aren't too good themselves and I make that statement after years of watching their performance
on the road and working near the Police Academy in WA, where quite a bit of police
driver training is done on the local roads.
And it probably wouldn't earn as much for the state coffers either.
Alan H.
