I need to get a roof basket of some sort for occasional use as space is limited and I don't want to tow and wish to keep the weight down so thoughts have turned to alloy. What I am wondering is are the extruded types like Rola etc any good or are they prone to coming apart? I've seen a few different types on ebay but don't want to purchase something that is likely to fail.

Was actually looking into the same thing at work today. We use aluminium extrusion to make benches as an optional extra for our machines, and we just happen to have a bit left laying around (I was thinking of using 30mm x 30mm square extrusion) .
I dont know how much its worth, but I dont think it`s very cheap. I think strengthwise it would be quite fine as long as you use the right fasteners to put it together and don`t overtighten any ropes and ratchet straps/ tie downs to secure your gear. Being aluminium I`m sure the lengths will bend quite easily by overtightening ropes etc, unless you brace it across the width.
Cheers

Gday,
I made one for my 80 series out of aluminium, the profile they use for
bus shelter seats or grand stands. I can undo four eye bolts, lift it of, fold down 4 legs and use it as a
camp table. Its really handy!
Cheers

Supercheap have cheap baskets and capsules - not alloy but might do the job. Depends on what you want to carry - noting that irrespective of the load carrying capacity of roof racks - the roofs on most 4wds are rated less than 100kg.

It won't be a lot up there just things like the tent, mattress and chairs. Really just the bulky stuff that takes up space inside that I don't have to spare when travelling with the family and isn't too heavy. It isn't needed when I go solo.
