G'day everyone, have read with interest about a few who were looking at travelling across the
Gary Junction road from Alice to
Newman.
Would like to hear from anyone who completed or tried as we are off across there in July '07 on our way to the Kimberly.
I would appreciate any & all comments, good & bad please. Not worried about fuel just the travelling conditions.
Thanks
Hoo Roo Rod!MPG:5!

G'day Rod. I was across there as far as
Well 33 in July. Unless it rains (!) it's as easy as the Great Central, although more remote.
We exited through the Kidson track.

Thanks Footloose, how many days did it take to
well 33 ? & how was the Kidson track ? we plan on heading out the
mine road so we can head down to
steep point first, then head up to
Broome & beyond.
Thanks

Alice to
Well 33 took around two and a half days, taking it easy. A quick feel for the part of the trip can be had at

The Kidson ..hmm...wouldn't recommend it because of the re growth, you'd find it a tough squeeze. I'd definately go through
Newman, and possibly take time to see some of the Pilbera.

Also across there in August. left
well 33 at about 1.30 pm camped at Jupiter
well
off at about 8.30 am next day, camped at 80 ks west of
Papunya then into Alice for late lunch next day. Did not call into KKKKura as one vehicle had a fuel leak and was booked for repairs that day. we did it in two days could take longer if you poked around. Road ok to good.

Left
camp at about 8 am , helped some locals with a flat tyre down the road. obtained fuel at
Papunya. Morning tea at the Hasts
bluff t/O .Then via
the Tanami track to Alice for a late lunch. Note we did not loiter as one of our vehicles had a leaking "O" ring on their fuel pump.

Hello Rod,
We travelled from
Papunya across the
Gary Junction road in August this year and found it very good. There were the usual corrugations, rocky stretches, wash outs and some sand. On the whole it was good going.
We camped at
Redbank Gorge in West McDonnell Ranges then headed west. It took us all of one day with stops at
Papunya, Len Beadell Markers etc to reach the WA border and
camp about thirty kms west. We found a really good
camp spot on the right in a grove of Desert Oaks near a place marked on the map as
Dover Hills.
Next day we stopped at Kiwwirrkurra community,
Kunawarritji community and various other spots before
camping near a repeater tower about ten kms from
Kunawarritji.
The next day saw us drive through the
salt lake country, then to Punmu and onto the Telfer
Mine Road.
All up it took us three days travelling and two nights
camping on the GJR crossing.
It was a great drive, just amazing and we enjoyed every bit of it. I'm sure you're going to as
well.
I would love to go back and repeat the trip as I found it so good. If you'd like any more information just give me a member message. I did put in a trip report if you're interested just put vivien c into the search bar and it should bring it up.
All the best
Viv
