To the TROOPY people out there..
We have a 75 series (hzj75) troopy with standard 16" split rims- fitted with LT235/85SR16 (Bridgestone D661) tyres. As the rubber is just about due for renewal at 50000km- it might be time to change to one piece rims.
OK- is it best to stick with 16 rims or go to 15s (as the 15" seem to be cheaper). It would be the Sunraysia type rim. If we go to 15" would a tyre be load rated OK and rolling diameter the same as current.
What should we look out for as far as clearance, legality etc??
What have others done- and any adverse/ favourable results??
Thanks
Signman

definily and absalutly stick with the 16s 16 inch tyres aredearer for a reason they are strongly constructed compared to an everadge 16 inch. Most 15s are just a baloon waiting to go pop with 6 ply rating (2 sidewall and 4 tread plys) whereas 16s are 8-10 ply with 7 ply tread and 3 ply sidewall (mtr)
If you do alot of offtrack work keep the splittys and put 14 ply rags on them. If not get some 7 inch 1 peices and put 265x75 (very popular size) or 6 inch rims and 235x85 (porb best with the former option).
And as phill g will tell you stock up wit a decent plug kit and plugs

Hi there Signman.....When I changed
mine over, which was almost straight away,I went to Bridgestones who supplied me with 16x7 one piece white rims and 265/75R16 AT's and they are coming up for replacement soon (next year before we go to GRR) and I have had no regrets AND usually don't talk to others about them because of the negative factor BUT I will going with them again.
It's like everything...somebody knows somebody who had the same ......"whatever".... and this and that happened and it cost them etc etc etc.
However I had NO trouble with my tyres at all....so if it ain't broke DON'T fix it.
My advice to you is stay with your correct wheel size...do not change....the vehicle came with that size rim, it designed that way.....you must get proffessional advice if you are intent on changing the specifications in any way, mechanical and/or legal....regards Phil

Thanks Phil
Just for interest sake- what 'number' Duellers are you using- and about how many kms did you get out of them. Must admit I have been very happy with the performance and wear rate with the D693s we had on previous vehicles- although much lighter than the Troopy.

They are A/T D693 LT265/75r 16 duelers mounted on "ROH TRAK 2" 7inch white rims and to date 62655 kilometers with around 3/16 of an inch to minimum wear indicators.

Hi Signman,
I've owned 37 cruisers and as a former tour operator, I've not had any probs with wider rubber and they make the ride more comfortable. Also you don't have the danger of the split rim ring exploding outward destroying anyone or anything that is in the way.
As for what tyres? The ones that suit YOU and what you intend to do with them are best and learn from your experiences.
Regards
Tour Boy

By all means dump the split rims - but you did
well getting 50,000k out of the 661's.
Like Davoe said, the 16x7 inch rims will give you the best choice of LT tyres, and 265/75R16 is the better size. The load index of the 15inch tyres is too low for a Troopie IMO.
To get the offset right on the troopie, you'll need to buy the correct offset sunraysias - usually ROH or Speedies. Will probably cost about $120 a wheel.

Signman,
Go with the 16" tyres on one piece rims.
You will find that 285x75x16 are the right diameter but they knock the performance around.
The 265x75x16 are better but the speed will be out. You will be going slower than indicated.
I am going to try a set of 265x70x18. They should be the same rolling diameter as the 265x75x16. A week down the
Vic High Country should sort them out.

all of these tyres are the same diametre
7.5x16, 235x85, 265x75.

Yep, Davoes right - original tyres were 750R16 - 810mm diameter - same as the 265/75 and 235/85. The 285's are around 840mm. But..... the original speedo usually overreads speed a bit, so the 285's correct it back to within 1%.
Wayne, where do you buy 18 inch
wheels to bolt up to a 75series? I would be surprised if you could get the offset. Diameter for 265/70R18 works out at 828mm.
Love to see you try them out in
the desert :-)))
Cheers
phil

Only my opinion---split rims are the go especially when the going gets rough.I've seen too many side wall failures with expensive wider tyres on the rough stuff up North.I'VE done many trips with splits with very few problems.

Yes I have a troopie also and am doing a trip round oz in Feb and I was advised by many people to stick to the 16's and the factory style tyre. So I bought an extra single peice 16 inch rim (the troopie already had a set of 5 single peice rims when i bought it) and an extra tyre for the trip.
