Hi all, first time member long time vistor.Ive had a wheel carrier fitted which was loose (the plate where the spare bolts on to the carrier which was letting the spare rock up & down) and was just wondering if any one else has come across this problem? Haven't had that problem. Do you mean there is a lot of free-play in the way the wheel sits on the bolts (3 on
mine) or that the plate doesn't tighten up against the wheel ?

Hi
Longreach & thanks for repling, the wheel is tight on the 3 bolts the problem seems to be with the plate that goes through the carrier.

Is vibration the problem?
Maybe replace with Nyloc nuts?

Take it back to ARB Northern and get them to fix it. Shouldn't be loose.

Hi Geoff,
Not wanting to hijack your thread, just a quick query about the cost.
My 80 wheel carrier is a no-brand type with a greasable pivot but no bearing. However 14ys has worn the guts out of it and there's loads of slop.
So Kaymar carrier is on the 'wanted' list.
How much did you pay for the carrier and how much for labour?
Cheers
BoB

I have got a Strongarm dual wheel carrier on the back of the Patrol. It has roller bearings for the pivots and substantial latches to hold it open and closed. There are hi-lift jack points as
well, and fitted was a lot less than 3 grand. I have been very happy with it.

$3800 to store a spare wheel !!!!! Glad I can just throw the 'extra' in the back and keep the standard spare as is. Can buy a lot of 'must haves' with that $3800 LOL

I will say that rear wheel carriers cop a hiding as soon as you go off-road.
I have a Kaymar Dual which I think has a similar arm arrangement to yours although it doesn't sound like yours has the problem
mine had.
The "stud plate" is held onto the arm by two 1 inch bolts that screw into it through the stud plate's securing post. The top part of the arm had actually cracked where the bolts go through, on my last simpson trip and had to be reinforced and welded back together.
You might check closely that nothing is breaking.
Cheers
Andrew.

Hi Andrew thanks for repling (and also all who did aswell) that seems to be where my problem lies, where the stud plate goes through the housing there seems to be between a 5 mm and 10 mm gap. The two securing bolts are tight but the stud plate still rocks withinn the housing(seesaw motion).
Cheers Geoff

Well I suggest getting it welded up/tightened up with reinforcing if necessary.
With the fact that it hangs off the back with a rubber stopper, plus in my case the tyre touches the arm so has a slight vibration there (enough to wear off the powder coating) and with a heavy weight suspended on it, it is multiplying the forces with leverage to boot, and thus all you are doing with any looseness is adding momentum and other rotational forces that will serve to break and/or loosen more.
Just lifting the wheel back on is sufficient reminder of how much weight is sitting up on there.
Cheers
Andrew.

I took it back to ARB & they said they had fixed the issue. What they done was to pull the spare hard up against the carriers arm to stop the movement, when i querried them about this they said its fine.Another concern now is the spare rubbing on the arm & any sand, dirt, rocks etc getting in between the spare & the arm & wrecking the sidewall of the spare, (as we all know its pretty cheap to replace a brand new BFG AT 275 x70 x16)
I also spoke to kaymar as
well and they say its ok as
well but im still not convinced its right.
Any way thanx all who answered & gave advise its heartening to know people are out they with similar interests and are willing to sit down and help a newbie with some wisdom, wisdom comes from experience and experience you can not buy! Cheers all geoff
