On 2nd November I wrote about my 3.0 litre turbo Patrol blowing up (ID39075)

The Nissan dealer told me that all four pistons were cracked as well as No. 2 cylinder losing compression. I assume the cracks had been there for a while and eventually it became too much for No. 2. My biggest concern was that the was just out of extended warranty at 152,300 km.

Good news. The details were sent to Nissan, I believe in Melbourne, and they have agreed to fix the Patrol at no cost to me. It will take a while I have been told as some parts need to come from Japan. Nissan met their obligations.

Now to wait and see how it is when I pick it up. Ever the pessimist.

Great news, what are they fixing it with a 4.2L or another 3.0L?

Somehow I don't think a 4.2 would fit on the head of a 3.0litre - more the pity as I feel a 4.2 would be an improvement.

I chuckled at that too, Muzz.

Gee, after many long years as a Nissan fan, that 3.0 litre motor has put me off 'em fer a long while.

They really stuffed up this time.

Yerss! I drive one of them 3.0 jobbies and I must admit that it has the power and torque to do all I wish to do with a 4WD but the question is in the back of my mind........are we gonna get home in this thing?

125,000 klm. so far, so good.

I have just left a work-doo tonight, put on by King Gee, and I managed a burnout in the carpark as I left. hehehehe

Heard a rumour that at the end of this model run, the 3 litre will come in a limited edition - the Nissan Maralinga.

But seriously, good result, hope your new motor serves you well.

Presently in its Darwin model, does the world a favour by blowing itself up.

Next year it's the Green model that does its own recycling by returning itself to the earth.

Ron,
How have you gone?

My 2001 Nissan Patrol 3.0 litre expired on November 16th with 109,123 km on the clock and six months out of warranty. It is currently at a Nissan dealership in pieces. No. 3 & 4 pistons have holes. I am still discussing with Nissan about who is paying for what, and exactly what will be replaced. Early accounts are 50/50.

At the moment I am still waiting for the parts to arrive before my Patrol is fixed. As I said in my contribution Nissan, have agreed to pay for the cost of the repairs.

I did a lot of research through ExplorOz and my dealer was aware I knew that this type of engine failure was a common fault. He said he was unaware of a fault with the engine but would see what head office knew if head office knew of a problem. The mechanic knew what had happened when he heard the motor trying to go. My Patrol was regularly serviced by the dealer who is carrying out the repairs.

Make your Nissan Dealer aware that you are aware of this fault and the problem exists and that other Patrols have been fixed by Nissan at their expense.

Check the following ID Nos through ExplorOz. -38711, 38251, 38264, 36285, 35547, 31419, 29873, 28853, 26648, 26325, 26453, 25296, 23439, 21075, 22027, 15786, 13206, 12145, 10505, 10001, 9915. These should give you some ideas

As you know there are so many sites about this defective engine it can take a long time ploughing through the information.

In particular check out ID 31419, reply 8 where a lady Val Davis at head is mentioned. I was anticipating phoning her with a complaint but they agreed, after I believe representation from my dealership, in repairing the engine.

Where were you when the engine failed and how fast were you going?

Keep informed of your progress

Ron,

Thanks for all of the ID number's. I had already been through a few of them will now go through the rest. I have being keeping a close eye on the forums and had prepared myself with what I will have to do when that day came.

As for when and where, we were 10 km from home on our way to Coral Bay for week. We were fully loaded with camper trailer in tow, just hitting cruising speed when it went bang. We were lucky to be so close to home but it sort of wrecked our holiday. But the worst thing was that we had to be towed back home by a bloody Toyota. With being six months out of warranty I knew I had to be careful and resist the urge to pull it apart and have a look.

Service history, our Patrol has been serviced every 5,000 km by a Nissan dealership where possible, which is not easy as the closes one is 500 km away. When someone other than a Nissan Dealership serviced it, then would supply them with the filters and quality oils. Also see #39766.

It seems odd that Nissan don't seem to have a common policy with this problem. I've seen various threads about this, with varying mileages when the blow-up occurred. But Nissan says 'yes" to some and "no" to others and "partly" to others again.

This fact should help all the others that either got no help whatsoever or had to pay for part of the repairs.

If Nissan have paid for just one IN TOTAL, then that sets a legally obliging precedent.
