Anyone done Mt Pinnabar towing a camper from Tom Groggan, we have done Davies High Plain from Tom Groggan, so this year we are toying with going up Pinnabar over to Swifts Creek and coming home via Davies High Plain.

Type of vehicle and camper?
Going up or coming down?
Pinnabar can be very slippery if wet.

The Prado might have problems if it has to stop on a steep bit, definately give it a miss if at all damp or (more likely) very very dry as the loose surface might cause nearly as bad traction probs as when wet.
In steep terrain it is the bulk of the towing vehicle as much as anything, the weight/size of a larger vehicle makes it harder for the camper to push it around.
Bear in mind that the 'off road' towing capacity of any 4wd is far less than the 'on road'. A vehicle that has a 2.5 t or more towing capacity on the tar might only have and off road capacity of around 750kg.
Sadly it is very hard to get an off road towing capacity out of manufacturers, but those that are available are usually pretty close to the unbraked towing capacity.

I'm definately not going if it's wet that's for sure, i have gone up to Davies High plain (dry) and had no problems, and from the info i've been hearing Tom Groggan Tr up to Mt Pinnabar is not as steep, but the condition of the track may be worse and make it alot harder.

We may use the D90 to sus out if it's doable, then go from there.

Hi Redback

Grogan to Pinnibar is steeper than Grogan to Davies, plus depending on which way you go from Pinnibar you'll encounter some steep sections.

Cheers

We towed a Kimberley Kamper around that area a couple of years back. Ok if it is dry, but very slippery if wet. Personally I elected to avoid that route with the KK in tow as it is steep in places, but did it as a seperate drive.

We went in on the Ingeegoobie (spelling) track and around to Davies High Plain.

Baz,

I agree with the others - steep and if wet you may have dramas.

As a side issue - try camping at Native Dog Flat on the way back if on the Limestone Road - great place.

If Native dog flat is the name for the little camping area on the Davies track between Tom Groggin and the start of the climb up the mountain be very wary as it is alive with bush rats and when we camped there after easter 06 all the vehicles had underbonnet damage, a brand new 79 series the worst (must have liked new plastic), inlet trunking holed, radiator header tank holed, wiring insulation chewed away. The other vehicles had damaged radiator hoses and insulation chewed away.

we attempted mt pinnabar 23/12/05 from dogmans hut with patrol auto and kimberley kamper got almost to the top but the last section was very steep and loose so had to back down about 400mtrs into a cutting turn around and camped at dogmans for the night.
24/12 it howled a gail through the night and rained that day so we tried davies track it was too slippery so we re crossed the murry rv and went the long way via cooryong to omeo and back in the other end of tom groggin track
hope this helps you if you need more info just yell .
we spend 3weeks in the high country over xmas new year ish and had a ball.

With a trailer and on a very steep 4WD track? I'll bet that was a bundle of fun!

OK thanks all, we are going to have a look, we have a D90 with us so he'll determin if it's ok to do, if not we will go Davies High Plain.
