Can anyone advise on a scale of 1 -- 10 how much noisier are Goodyear MTR's over ATR's & the effect on fuel consumption if any ?

Will be noiser, and will affect fuel.. but both depend on 12904823094823098 vairables, car its on, what speeds, usage etc...

How much noiser, thats an individual thing. MTR's are quiet to me.

they will be a bit noiser.. Any MT will be.. but the end result is worth it.

as to the fuel affect, too many variables inc size width conditions etc. all being = fuel will use more, any MT will do, but as to how much, you maynot notice it - some have, others havent..

Presently running 31 x 10.5 x 15 on 60 Series Cruiser that is noisy at the best of times without bringing tyres into the equasion.

Now ! come on Truckster it's been rustproofed from new & is one of the few with no rust (as yet). Bet it's got less than your Nissan & mines a 83 model, & you don't get rust in the side windows like the Pootrol. Love to give you a photo, but it's only going to make you jealous. Touche !

I've been slack and havn't balanced mine for nearly 20k, they are starting to get noisy, I've done about 30k on them now. A balance will make them shut up though. With the surf I can only hear them when the windows are down anyway, so it's not a big deal...

I aksed this blow but why would fuel consumption be different for the same size tyre with a different tread pattern?

Alls I can think of are:
. less tread on the road = less rolling resistance = less fuel used
. different sidewall structure = changed rolling resistance but marginal and could go either way
. big lugs catch more wind = use more fuel
. Mud Tyres cause male testosterone to increase = higher consumption

Elucidate me please?

Truckster,
Your a brave man putting up the bank's house without their permission. Where did you get the dough for the GU, I thought you had a GQ. Win the Lotto or something ! Don't tell me, but you wanted a 3ltr Nissan. No my 60 Sahara Turbo with aftermarket 2 tone (gold over choc) is one of the few that's been garaged from new & surpriseingly I often get offers to part with it,(250,000 origonal K's) & it goes like a dream with no oil leaks. Thought of buying a new 100 Series Sahara TD, but it would be a crying shame to take it where I take this, so I won't be updateing. Went out & bought a new BF XR6T instead. Even the local 4WD Business tells me I would be a fool to sell it. Cheers !

I can hear MTR's coming a mile away. At 100km's they sing a tune. Not sure what they are like in the vehicle but couldn't imagine them being quiet.

from my experience it depends a bit on road surface nd I would say on a scale of 1-10 min 2 max 4 depending on the road. Anyone that think they are noisy has obviosly never had offroad tyres.
Serislythough they are well and truly below the threshhold that sperates a noticibly noisy tyre from a quite one

Here's a review on the Goodyear MTR's, mention is made to their noise levels on bitumen however no worse than their competitors.

Hi Shane

It can be hard to get a good feel of this because tyre noise becomes worse normally throughout its life.

I change between 4 tyre sets on my Patrol, in order of noise they are

1pt Toyo Opat's AT 235/85/16 - lowest noise almost can't here

3pts BFG AT 265/75/16 - even nice kind of noise - not objectionable

7pts Cooper ST 255/85/16 Intrusive at low speeds, a little louder than road noise at 100km/hr

10 Pts MTR's 265/75/16 Loudest particurlarly when cornering.

MTR's averaged 18.5/lt 100k / compared to 17.5 Cooper st and approx 16.5lt 100k other two

How much more noise.........about one notch of the radio volume control. They are not that bad. The ones you usually hear coming a mile off are on vehicles where the wheel align has been out and they have worm uneven or heal and toed. Keep your wheel align right and rotate tyres reguularly and you will find them more than acceptable.

Interesting debate this road noise thing...........I can't talk about MTRs but over the past couple of days I've been driving my wife's Barina and I could swear that this bloody thing ( fitted with bridgestone doughnut T thingys) has about twice the road noise as my Patrol with BFG ATs....:-)

That would probably be right as your patrol would have plenty of carpet, padding & sound proof paint & the Barina has next to nothing.

My MTR's are no noisier than the previous 693's I had on, I'm very surprised at the lack of noise.

Fuel consumption I don't know as it's of no real concern to me but I accept that it would be more than a less aggressive tyre.

Shane, ATR - 5, MTR - 7......... Possibly 1 MPG more fuel for same size tyre but always difficult to tell as many people go to a taller / wider tyre when getting a mud pattern.
The noise increase will be different for each car depending on carpet, underlay & sound deadening paint etc. In my 100 series for example tyre noise between a standard Road Gripper & an oversized MTR is often hard to tell if the window is closed but in an old bare basic Hilux the increase would be very noticeable.
The MTR is only slightly noisier than All Terrain type patterns & pretty similar to other mud patterns, the one exception being on smooth asphalt where they do tend to howl a bit more.
The MTR is IMHO one of the best all round off-road/onroad tyres currently available.
As David mentioned correct wheel rotation & alignment will minimise unnecessary noise.
Cheers Craig.....

Cracker, for the same size tyre why would the fuel consumption be up?, Surelt rolling resistance isnt that much higher for a different tread pattern?

Bonz I'd guess the much thicker sidewalls (nearly twice) & to a lesser degree the open tread pattern would add a little to the rolling resistance. I suppose a little like the difference between a road bike & a mountain bike, the knobby tyres are far harder to push.
Cheers Craig.............

Hiya Bonz,

I have gone from ATR's to the same size in MTRs on the Prado. I was getting easy 1250km from a tank and with the MTRs it has knocked me back to about 1100km between fills.

I have noticed no real difference in ride, handling is poorer on tarmac but incredible on fast dirt. Not sure why the economy suffers.

Cheers

That's a fairly big reduction in fuel efficiency Muddy. Even after stepping up 2 tyre sizes with the MTR's I didn't lose anywhere near that much. Did you fit a foof rack, raise the suspension or any add heavy bar work/winch at the same time as the tyres?
Cheers Craig..............

Nope, that was the only change. I have not done accurate fue stats on it - that is an estimate only. I have my last few fuel card receipts here so might go do some sums.

Done some sums and they have knocked me from around 14l/100km to 15.5l/100km over the last several fills.

I already had a hefty ARB roof rack that knocks off about 1l/100km. Will put the Cooper ATR's back on for a little while and see what happens!

Cheers

I run goodyear ATR's for about 65000km before changing to goodyear MTR's
Have done 10000km on MTR's I personally find them about as noisy as the ATR's with a bit of wear. I do agree MTR is noisier when cornering but the MTR is my pick over the ATR both on and off road. I didnt notice any real change in fuel economy. The goodyear ATR I found to be very slippery in the wet the MTR sticks like sh*t to a blanket. I run 265/75/16.
All in all I am very happy with the MTR just wish I had gone with them first when I had the choice. Dont let me scare you off the ATR's were good tyres and I didnt get a single flat its just that I find the MTR miles ahead for my need.
Should mention was I the same boat as your in now should I shouldn't I dont really need chunky tyres do a lot of highway stuff.

I thank you all for your answers & I think I'll give them a try as up till now I haven't really heard a bad thing about them. In the 693's I have had a couple of sidewall punctures in paddocks, & looking at the specs of the MTR they seem to have a thicker sidewall, so I can put up with a slightly harder ride if thats the case. (In the 60 Series you wouldn't pick the differance anyway).

Apparantly they have the strongest sidewalls of the popular radials but they are still very easily holed (sidewalls - tread is immpresivly strong) - deffinitly go for them but dont belive all the never had a puncture hype
