Hi Brad,
If I remember right, my 100 series 1HZ was a shim adjustment and was done every 20 or 25000km. Hope it helps.
Trevor.

Yes, every 40000kms you should have them inspected, they should be ok, but piece of mind says do it...i think the 1hzzzzzz is every 40k....what does the book say???

Hi there Dozer, should I have myn done at the same intervals for the 2.8 ?? My book says every 20k they should be done but have been told thats crap its just toyota's way of making money. I know the last time they were done (for sure)was around the 170k mark when they had to pull the head off to get the glow plugs out as they had welded (if thats the description) them selves in. It was always put into get the major things done at a workshop as I wont play with things I know nothing about so I am presuming they have been done. But just went through all my service receipts and there is nothing saying about them being done. It now has just over 290k. Dont seem noisy or any thing. I did ask my mate who works for toyota but he said "get this" they dont touch them full stop unless the head comes off for some reason and the other funny piont is that they dont even have the proper tool for removing the shims and thats at toyota bit of a worry. I got a quote just before typing this and was told between $150/250 depending on how many shims it needs and wether they can swap around with whats already in there, and needs to be done when motor is cold so wants me to drop it down there the night before. Does this seem like a fair price ? Regards Steve M

Gday
They are not that hard to check the adjustment, i would buy a workshop manual and a pair of feeler gauges to check them myself....8 times out of 10 they will be still in spec....but if they arnt, they will be tight, and quieter than normal...then the valves get burnt out because they cant get rid of the heat through the
seat into the
water in the head.
A friend of
mine has never checked his.....and it caught up with him a few months ago....cost 4000 bux and is still having problems with it.....the
seat fell into the piston. Chomp chomp...crunch

Hi Brad
I recently had my 1HZ service at at toyota dealership (80k)
the shims should be checked every 40k
It's not a big job to check heights,it will get complicated if they need shims adjusted/replaced,couldn't tell you how much $ but my full service cost around the $900 mark(with gear/transfer oil which is not part of the routine service)
