I'm starting to trawl the ads for a diesel wagon to transport the child bride & I,
& a couple of mates, around oz on our bi-annual trips. Last time had a Prado
TD auto from Mr Avis, & loved it but those are not around in my budget limits.
We are sedate(d) travellers towing a sub 750KG C/t. This vehicle will not be the daily duty type & will pretty much be the holiday wagon when time permits.
Now, I can see the odd Jack, around 2000/2001 with less than 100k for around that
$20k+ mark & am interested. What I need from the much respected contributors
to this
forum is advice from owners on such wagons & anything I should be wary of. Yes, I have read of the starting problems etc in this
forum. Please stick to
diesel as I have no intention of carrying jerrys of ulp & being a mobile bomb.
Thanks for your help...oldbaz.

Hi
Oldbaz
Had a Jackaroo 3lt auto from new, till 38000km no problem's at 38600 started using oil and would go off the dipstick in 600kms. Still under new car warranty when sold Holden wasn't convinced it was using oil. Spots all over back of wagon and no oil leaks under car. Took a loss and sold it and got a new 3lt Prado auto. Chalk and cheese for comfort and driving. prado sits on the road and just drive like a car, Jackaroo was always needing to be steered as it moved around on the road all the time. As towing it was great, plenty of power for both tandem caravan and camper trailer. Had a long range
tank fitted to it and that gave it a great range when towing. If it had not used oil would probably still have it.
Cheers
Charlie

Thanks for your assessment, Charlie. I havent yet driven a Jack but found,as did you, a lot to like about the auto td Prado. In fact if the ball dropped an auto would
be my first choice. A bit more research has also revealed that high km units younger than 6 yrs seem hard to find which is a bit of a concern. Will probably hire
again for a
Kimberley foray next April & keep quizzin you blokes on EO...oldbaz.

I have a 2000 Jack 3.0 Auto.
Have had it since 38,000 km/2001 and would not recommend them to anyone.
It has been the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned. My 63 Kombi was more reliable. Unfortunately I didn't dispose of it earlier and with depreciation being very severe it is more economical for me to run it into the ground than try to update now.
Parts and servicing are expensive requiring synthetic or synthetic blend oil, two oil filters. Repair and fault finding of the motors is not common knowledge mostly held by experienced Holden Dealers (not all Holden dealers have 4JX1 experienced mechanics) and some of the major 4X4 diesel repairers who from experience try to avoid getting involved in fault diagnosis.
I know of one Jackaroo being towed over 500km because a trailer plug fault blew the brake light fuse and it wouldn't start.
With all the work our Jack has had done we still have problems with it overheating when towing or when it gets reasonably hot.
Regards Craig

Thanks for your frank assessment, Craig, sorry to hear of your misfortune with
this vehicle. No doubt others have had a better run (see Below) but I appreciate your input & will take it on board..oldbaz.

Hi oldbaz,
I have owned 5 Jackaroos since 1982 the last one being a 1998 3l Turbo Diesel. I have had no trouble to speak of with any of them.
I think the price you are looking at for that vehicle is probably a bit high. Check out the money on the "Red Book" site.
My main advice would be check that the recalls have been done the last one in about May 2006, new O rings.
It would be a bonus if it was privately owned and Serviced by a Holden dealer. Not that I have any love of Holden Dealers but at least they have experience with the Injection System.
I used BP Vellanus Global Plus 10w-40 CG spec I did not experience starting problems at -6c
I would have bought an other one if they were still made. In the meanwhile I am very happy with my Nissan Patrol
Cheers

Hi, your comment re the money is spot on, the only 2 I found over $20k had
only 70/80k cliks on them. The fact you had 5 Jacks in 16 years I find a bit of a worry, but as you had minimum problems I guess you just liked to update. I hope
whatever I get will last damn near that long, but only plan on doing 10k or less a year. I'm one of those old fashioned blokes who buy second hand & drive till they
aint worth fixin. works for me...oldbaz.

Do a search of the
forum:
Posts 22252, 20967, 37927, 14837, 29032 may give you some clues about what
forum users have had with their 3 litre Jacks.

Oldbaz,
The only other issue not mentioned is the poor clearance under the transfer case - it sticks out like the proverbial, and theres not much you can do about it.
I personally prefer to buy a vehicle that I am confident about, instead of one where you have to worry about known faults.

I've got a 99 TD Manual Jackaroo. They are a bit finnicky, a few issues to watch out for like oils, but with the right advice and a bit of research you can have a vehicle with a better power/weight ration than the new 4 cyl patrol, one that would use 15L/100km towing at the most, good 4wd capabilities, plenty of after market accessories if that's what you want, all for a very decent price for what you get.
Yes, there have been problems. I have sorted all
mine out now, and in the process had 4 new injectors installed free of charge (at vehicle at 90K). On sand/dirt/light mud etc excellent. Great rear LSD. Haven't tried in any hardcore situations.
If you want some excellent advice, go to www.
forum.australia4wd.com where there is an excellent Australia based Jackaroo specific
forum, heaps of specific information and great people (like here!)
I am so happy and confident in my TD Jack now I have just purchased a 133L long range
tank, front Auto Locker, and plan on having LPG added to it when they have time to fit it!
D-Jack.

Hi, D-Jack, thanks for responding, you seem to have yours sorted & doing the
sort of K's I would anticipate. While some comment has been unfavourable I will
not dismiss the Jack just yet either. The lack of positive comment is a bit of a
concern though. Thanks for the website, will check that too...oldbaz.

I have a 2002 TD auto & I am very pleased with it. Ok I AM NOT PLEASED with the General & his minions but I have the manuals on CD, I have found non genuine filters available & I do my own serviceing, in a few words I'd say ecconomical & gutsy, just what I need as a tow vehicle, handles the 2400kg Gin Palace with ease....
Maybe not as capable off road in
the rock climbing sense, but no probs with roads classified as 4X4 only....
Nothing wrong with the vehicle but the dealer service leaves a lot to be desired....

Ah, Mr Fawlty, at least you took the effort to defend your Jackaroo,
well done.
The fact that not many did is a little concerning but the marque remains on the list
nevertheless. Your Gin Palace certainly outweighs my Bundy Burrow so economy
should be even better....oldbaz.

Old baz, yeah
well I reckon the truth lies somewhere in the middle, if you buy the vehicle with your needs in mind, rather than be one of the boys i.e show some independant thought plus realise that these new fangled diesel engines have to be new fangled to get the power out of them that they do then you are on the right track. I've taken
mine twice round australia with never a hitch apart from the recalls...
But no I'm not going to cross the Simpson in it because it simply is not suited but it has taken me to
Chambers Pillar and a few other remotish spots without drama...

Mr Fawlty, how does one establish if the recalls have been done? Would it appear in service records or how can paper proof be sighted ?. Like you, the Simson or the
Cape arent on my shortlist either, plan to do the Great Central, Gibb RR, & maybe
the Duncan/Buntine next April, so hardly the most difficult of terrains.
What sort of fuel economy do you get ? Solo & towing. Sorry for the quiz, but
always looking for good info...oldbaz.

Any Holden Dealer can check on whether recalls have been needed or completed. There should be notations in the service records as
well though some
places "sanitize" these to give the vehicle a good bill of health. Just check and see if any pages are missing. They will need the VIN & they may actually try & charge you to find out...You could also email Holden Customer Assistance: customerassistance@au.gm.com
They have resolved several disputes with Holden in my favour actually. I get around 11km/ltr solo & pulling the Gin Palace this drops to about 7km/ltr....Mind you I'm not a slow driver....
