I was sitting in the lounge room today when I heard a loud bang, my son and I looked at each other and thought what the hell was that! So we went out and had a look around and could not see anything, I thought maybe the air-con had taken its final breath...no that was working fine.. I could see dust settling around my patrol had a look around and could not see anything...mmmmmm a mystery. Go inside light up a smoke and put the mind into overdrive thinking...nah I need to know what that was go back out and relise my wheel cover is in a funny shape take the cover off and discover my spare has blowen out just sitting there in the driveway...never heard of that before...tyre guy said he has seen it before....suppose lucky it was there and not down a track some where
Cheers Stefan

Yep, mate of
mine had that happen on the
Oodnadatta. We were camped up along the way with the campfire going, next thing wham!
Thought it sounded like a tyre so walked around both trucks but nothing. Then glanced up at the roof rack of his Disco and saw a funny bulge in the tyre on the rack. It had pulled the rubber off the wire beading. Bridgestone Dueller AT made in Thailand.

Might be a Bridgestone thing as i had an brand new dueller blow while mounted on the rear carrier. This was the older model which was a really crap tyre as i also had 3 delaminate.

Me thinks the wheel cover contained the explosion

Pressure down is not going to stop tyres blowing!
If you have lower pressure your sidewalls (steel) flex more each time the
wheels goes around making the tyre hotter, hence more chance of a blowout in hot long contitions (ie up North of WA). We used to see that alot, people driving 4wd's around with 30psi all day if 45+c heat at 120kph, BANG! .
Higher pressure means less sidewall flex, less heat in tyre.

Oh yeah, dunno WTF with the spare blowing, but that's somthing I'd be concerned about if I had the same model tyres on my rig!
Most blowouts happen because the tyre pressure is LOW (ie a puncture), people keep driving not realising that it has gone down in pressure, the sidewalls heat up and then blow out.

I have had the same problem with a dunlop, the Rav parked at the shopping centre in the sun. Came back to the car to find the side wall blown open, the tread torn right across and half the steel belt sticking out through the tear. I had changed the wheel a couple of days earlier because the tread had lifted, the tire presure was 30 psi a few days before and Dunlop didn't want to repair it.
Cheers,

I have had 3 Desert Duellers blow out and one with a large bulge - all at manufactures recommended pressures - never again will I use Desert Duellers.
Anyone want to buy 2 x Desert Duellers, I still have 2 left but do not trust them - will take them to the dump one day after putting a knife through them as someone will kill themselves when they blow out if they are not careful.

Thanks for the heads-up on exploding tyres.
l havent had that problem but simular with BFG AT's comming of the rim, eg the bead brakes.its happened 3 times now, 2 which l can account for,(1, hit a tree stump, 2, low pressure 12psi climbing
embankment) but the 3rd time, all l did was drive over a rut that was not so deep and it popped the bead on the rear left...it got me thinking about the tyres and the rims and is it a know problem with this tyre or is it a problem with the design of LC 16" steal rims, or is it just bad driving or luck.
Cheers

Hi Stephan,
Coming back from Margaret River in WA a couple of years ago I started to sense some vibration in the steering wheel of my Cherokee, didn't think much of it, but it got worse and a guy driving a car over taking me was pointing at my front tyre. On the inside of the tyre wall was a huge bulge. I pulled over just before Bunbury and changed the tyre. The bulge was as big as a soft ball, the noise I was hearing was the tyre hitting the front springs on every revolution. Got the wheel changed and put it in the back, 5 mins later nearly bleep my pants when it decided to explode in the back. Wont be recommending goodyear eagles to any one. Thank goodness for some one spotting it at 110km/hr, could have been interesting.
Cheers Glenn
