I have had got a lot of damage to the back of my GU and one option is to put a rear wheel carrier on instead of the original rear bar and guards I have got a full set of roof racks so I could keep the second spare tyre up there.
Are the rear wheel carriers good what are the advantages or do they make it a payne to access the rear of the GU?
Rear wheel carriers are they worth the $$$$$$ around $3000?
If so which is the best brand?
Does any one make a alloy Rear wheel carrier?
What else do you use them for other than carrying TWO spares as if this is there only real papas I will probably stick to my racks?
Please Give Me Advice

See the Trader section.....there is an Opposite Lock dual wheel carrier for sale for $1200-......
I have one of these fitted to my GU. The advantages are that you don't have to hoik the spare up onto the roof.......it helps keep the centre of gravity lower.......it takes the weight of the original spare tyre off the back door (thus preserving the life of the hinges etc)......it provides a solid rear end (unlike the plastic bumper bar).
The disadvantages:........weight!!! it weighs about 80kg with the extra wheel added in........access to the back; but you do get used to this aspect and it just becomes second nature and only takes a couple of seconds, literally, to undo the 2 catches.
You can remove the 2nd spare and it's swing arm quite easily, so you only need to mount it up when you're going on a decent trip if you wish. There's no reason why you couldn't jury-rig a jerrycan holder to go on one side instead of a 2nd spare tyre too if that suited you better.

When trying to think of more uses for rear carriers... I have seen plenty of hi-lift jacks and shovels attached to the back of the spare
wheels on carriers. However i'd be interested to know if there is an attachment aftermarket or otherwise (custom) where you can attach a jerry can. I was thinking the extra weight on the rear wouldn't do the swing arm any good.
Any thoughts / ideas?

Isn't now illegal to carry Fuel jerries on these holders??
So that would mean that you could only have
water jerries on the back.

Yeah Kev, I've heard the same. I guess if you have to carry
water anyway you might as
well put it out of the way. If you has a tap on the bottom of the jerry you wouldn't even have to remove it to use or fill.

I suspect it is not illegal to carry
water there or Biodiesel (another good reason to go for Biodiesel). Probably not diesel either.

I bought a rear wheel carrier s/h and it sat in the shed for years. I have
barn doors, and the carrier is a leftie, which means it covers the main access to the cargo area ie the left door.(80 series).
Remote area travel meant that I needed 2 spares so I put the carrier on.
Accessing the rear is a small pain, but it's a bigger pain getting a second spare off a roofrack..I don't like racks anyway.
The carrier cost me 400 bucks. 3 grand is a rippoff ! Buy a trailer and carry as many as you want :))

Are they worth $3000?? No where near it. When you consider that one 4b store was selling some for $1500 as "10 only show specials" shows you what profit there is.
Also search for a thread recently where I posted up about a club desert traveller in teh same way Willem travels and for ~20 odd yrs, who snapped both chassis rails over the diff in his GU - twice
Since has sold off his dual carrier.

There is no doubt the additional weight is a imposition and probably not justifiable in many ways. But it gets the rear up from under the back of the 100-series (but then I know you don't care about that).
Next one I get I will be seriously considering the weight of it. I love the look of the ARB ones, but suspect that they not only cost too much, but also more things to go wrong with them.
Mine [Kaymar dual] recently broke at the top of one of the arms for no particular reason I can see - had to be welded up and reinforced, but they certainly take a hammering hanging out the back.
Without it though, I don't think I'd be able to go where I go.

If you can afford it - then yes. If you cannot afford it - then no. Same as most things like fridges, vehicles. $3k is a lot but means more to some and less to others - BTW you can get a Strongarm for around $2100 new with twin carriers.

try contacting Equipe Automotive 4x4 in queensland I think they are. Quoted for my hilux 690 bux less 10% for trade price. pretty good if you ask me and compared to kaymar carriers. yeah Kaymar are probably better but for that price I can break 3 of the cheaper ones. wont hurt to give them a try. sorry, dont have the link.

Ours also fractured and needed welding - fortunately when we were home. I don't know what brand it is; it was on the Patrol when we bought it. We take one off when we are home or travelling civilised areas. They stick out a lot further than the traditional tyre-on-door, and it gave us problems with turning circle and the caravan - limited what we could put where on the a-frame.

Mine is a K & N made here in
Perth ,
well worth the dollars if your going outback and the flat top on the rear bumper acts as a table for me,
