Hi Davoe, I must admit is a dilemma.
My Broth in law in Perth swears by Robsons. They only do 4x4 and he would never go anywhere else. They are in Bentley which is not too far for you.

I used to take mine to Robson Brothers, bloody good service (unless the apprentice is on it) but a bit hefty on the hip pocket. Very thorough though.

Now, I do it myself, parts are cheap, and if I dont know, I give it to a mechanic such as A1 or United for all the fuel injection stuff etc..

20000 isnt that wheel bearings/fuel filter as well
$630 is a bit rich but how much are you paying them per hour.
i know our local toyota people are about $90 +gst an hour so a 20000k service is around $400 just in labour alone plus parts
cheers

It's SO rude considering most of the mechanics at that dealership are bloody apprentices! Same with Scarborough, 10 apprentices doing regular service jobs with the Mechanics doing the harder stuff! And $90 per hour they charge!! That's some good markup!

Yeah I do mine myself now too, everytime I get it back from anyone who's done work on it, there is always something they haven't dont!

Midland Toyota did the timing belt on it, they left a clip and a bolt out of the time cover (one bolt was sitting in the cover, just was screwed in so it was almost hitting the fan blade, the coolant surge tank had the top off it and the tank was lose just resting on the shroud! AND they charged $100 more than anyone else AND it took them ALL DAY when it's a half hour job. (don't even have to take the drive belts off!).

But if this vehicle is new, you need book services to keep the warranty. I'd just try and find someone local, have a look at there workshop, the cars they are working on , and give him a couple of curly questions and see what he says.

Personally I'd rather them say "I don't know" than make up some bull bleep .

Hey there Davoe, your dead right. Thats way over the top. Think a std service for an ordinary vehicle is about $160 ish, I know its a bit more for a 4by but not a hell of a lot more. I'd query the invoice with them and ask for an itemised account. They are required by law to provide one. Not happy I missed the Sunday sech, what say we do the track from the opposite end next time and end up at the Hotel. While I was behind you I didnt see any bits fall off the yota, yah must have a good one.........catch up soon Lionel.

Oh! and another thing. When in those dealer workshops, have you noticed the apprentice's do most of that kind of work. Bet their not on 90 bucks an hour, not even half of that.

Nope not even close to $90 and hour...1st year 6ish, 2nd 8ish, 3rd 11ish and fourth is 13ish!!

Plus tool allowance of about $5 a week!!

Oh and yes it is apprentices that keep all dealerships operating!!!

Robsons is dear but about the only time you get what you pay!!

Matt.

it is all itemised and he has given me the price and items for he 40k (big service)
there was no blatent ripping off or overservicing - that was pretty much the set price.
There is no comparrasin for the price on getting a diesal 4by serviced and a petrol car.
I have sort of told her owning a 4by makes no sense at all ifit doesnt go offroad every thing about them is 2-3 times te price of car ownership

Buy a Mitsu next time... My 95k, which was timing belt and all that was only about $680. Standard 15k(Minor) is $150 odd and 30k(Major) is around $180. This is for a V6 petrol.

It was alrady booked in for the Monday Morning. It has got some kind of 5 year warranty she thinks it needs to be seviced at Toyota so I have to check that out.
The Qs about 4wd mechanic was more for next time.
Most importantly If I was to charge in and reschedule the booking at another place late while she was starting a new job wouldnt have gone down well - Its kinda the whole just coz you ae a guy doesnt mean you know everything ,thing need a bit of time to work on it

Hi Davoe, we live in the Perth Hills and we take our Patrol to Allmake autos in Railway Pde in Cannington, (opposite the railway station). He has been our family mechanic for some years now, we trust him knowing he has never ripped us off, he has even apologised when occassional services have cost more than expected.
I'm not sure if yours is still under warranty whether or not that may void it, that you would have to check on. Our daughter had a commodore once and took it back to the Holden dealer for fist after sale service and like you was quoted $900+ so she chucked the warranty and went with Allmake.

May I say we have absolutley no connection with Allmake or have no other reason to reccomend him other than our experience which you have requested.

Cheers

D&B

give an apprentice a brake will you we all must learn some where even if it only on a Patrol

Maybe some day when we grow up we might be able to work on some real cars....

You all need to have a think about the way people make money and pay you

Dunworkin not you but everyone...

apprentice once

I agree with Richard. Apprentices like all other traineees rely on hanbds on experience to become qualified.
The other side to it is,apprentices should be working under the direct supervision of a tradesperson and not be a replacemsnt for one;)

Sorry Richard Kovac, didn't mean anything against apprentices, ( We have employed them ourselves in the past) just stating a fact. BTW yes you must give apprentices a go and that is how they learn but if they are not supervised while they are learning how are they going to learn????

Cheers

The problem is that the above statements I'm sure are made at the dollar value not the value of the apprentices

yes they should and I'm sure they are supervised as you know it cost a lot more than the $5.00/hr you pay an apprentice..

My point is that some people should have a think about it

Not meaning anyone in general, just those around as

Richard or DICK (no my mum called ME richard) LOL HaHaHa...

It's been a long two day of a week

Toyota Hilux and landcruisers are that common in oz any mechanic should be able to do a basic service.
After all ,if home mechanics like me can keep a vehicle well serviced ,then anyone who has done a 4 yr apprenticeship should be able to do it.

I did the engine,gearbox,t/case and diff oils plus the air ,oil and fuel filters and the timing belt for $227.00.
I used Castrol diesel oil in the engine,Castrol VMX 80 in the gearbox /tcase and fronT diff,CastrolLS90 in the LSD rear
I used Ryco and Delco filters and a Croc Country timing belt.

Also greased all the nipples in the steering ,suspension and drive shafts but that is almost cost free in materials.

Im with you Davoe, do all my own work, so I know its done properly, not to mention the costs.
Run a small fleet of 5 vehicles and only thing I dont do much with is specialty items such as auto trans, air con and EFI stuff.
Have found a good mechanic though of recent times who has done abit of work to the EFI, gas powered falcon, and does all my air con work. Very happy with his honesty and workman ship.

Cheers Pesty

Daveo,

As others have said Robson brothers in Bentley have a good reputation. There is also TLC on Stockdale Rd, O'Connor - they specialise in Cruisers, Luxs etc.

Bit far from the Hills - but close to freao for a day out.

If you seriously want a completely trustworthy mechanic his name is Harry Stiller and his number is 9528 5477 mob;041 251 5733 I've been using him for the last 6 years and he's saved me a small fortune , never ripped me off , and he could have many times, he's in his 50's German and true to form THROROUGH, he charges $180 for full service, and $225 with filters, he's in Rockingham so that maybe a quandry, but if not use him with complete confidence,
the best,
Dave
