Hi there,

Just now I am waiting to get my Landcruiser back from Toyota, where they have done the 20.000 km service. This is relatively expensive due to the fact that they also have to change the grease in the bearings, as a general precaution, which I found rather strange.

Has anyone ever had problems with the bearings and not chnaged the grease every 20tkm.

As always, thank you for you resonses
Dirk

i wouldnt be worried about the extra cost on the wheel bearing expecially at 20000ks.
main reason being they havnt yet been checked since the vehicle was made.
if there done at 20000 at least you know there right then leave it and do it at every 40000k if you like.wheel bearing service isnt that dear we charge$150 extra per pair.that covers a cpl of hours labour and all new seals.
when you think about it $150 vs how much was your vehicle?
cheers

EV,

$520 at my local dealer. I keep going back because they are very customer orientated and easy to deal with. Mind you they'd want to be!!! :-)

Thank you. Not up to 20k yet let alone 40k, just preparing.

The biggest waste of time was the complimentary service soon after delivery. Dealer did absolutely nil from what I could see from the room above.

I think it has something to do with the fully flaoting axles - bearings can and do stuff up and it aint good if thatg happens. I do mine every 2 years (around 25-30k)

G/day Dirk, mate doesn’t matter what make your ride is... Wheel bearings is wheel bearings... An integral part to the operation of allowing your wheel to rotate on its axil, so it’s imperative that a preventive maintenance plan be strictly adhered to… Ifin ya don`t … she goes kaput… so there you are… up S/C without a paddle, cursing all & sundry… wishing you’d spent the extra $$$s, bottom line, learn to do em yourself or take the pain…From my end, got an Effie 100 Dana 40 front axil, do em every 12 mths… 15yrs never had a problem Cheers Ron.

Dirk just to add to my last, the grease that lubes the bearing will, over time become contaminated from a number of sources, natural wear of the cup & rollers, junk that gets into the hub during the assembly process, (don’t laugh I’ve seen it happen, 30yrs as a diesel fitter) ingress of water past the seal, I’ve seen new bearings fail prematurely from all the above due to the incorrect fitment of the seal, choosing the correct type of grease is important as well, has to specifically be for wheel bearings, I’ve probably missed a few points but you get the picture… Its one area where “near enough IS not good enough”… So what price do you put on a trouble/worry free trip??? As apposed to being up S/C…Mmmmm methinks I know the answer already.
Cheers Mate.

I had mine checked at 10,000KM after a wet outback trip. They were OK. They needed repacking at about 40,000KM.
