Does anyone know if an 8000lb Thomas winch has a shear pin or similar?
Also my winch (vehicle just bought) has a dog clutch on the left hand end with a lever (6 inch) that sticks straight up. The lever won't move and the wire spool just free wheels.
Any advice appreciated. Ian

The Thomas electric winch doesn’t have a shear pin, line pull is limited by motor output (grunt). It would be nigh on impossible for the electric motor to exceed the 8000 lb rating.
The dog clutch can be a bit of a dog (pun intended) Spool the drum in/out by hand, at the same time push/pull lever away from the drum, keep pressure applied untill clutch fingers engage.
Cheers Ron.

Try some CRC or similar on the linkage and sliding dog, it may be corroded due to lack of use.

Only PTO model has a shear pin.
Check the electric motor prone to rusting if wet.
Very expensive to replace. I have orignal owners manual, must be at least 20 year old.

Sounds like the gearbox end may be siezed up from lack of use. Suggest pulling apart, cleaning & lubricating. To engage the gears power the motor out whilst pulling the gear lever to the left (looking at winch). The cogs are rarely aligned properly.

The dog lever will only engage in two positions, 180 degree apart. Whilst rotating the drum by hand (or on/off with the controler) and by holding firm pressure on the dog lever away from the winch, it should engage within about a half revolution. If not, the slider inside that end of the body could have seized. You will then have to remove the winch from the chassis and slide off that end of the winch to have a captain
cook.
