The subject of gps systems has come up a lot of late. I have been reading comments with interest. My Question is, does anyone use a Garmin GPS 18 usb mouse with a laptop and do you use city navigator with it. I have city navigator v6 on my laptop and looking at it without any form of gps I can zoom into tracks like the Oodnadatta etc... So I expect I could use this software to get me most places i want to go, We dont intend going off road as such just stick to tracks. I am aware I won't be able to use Ozexplore with it, but don't really need it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I'm a bit lost here , you have City navigator Version 6 on your laptop, to do this you must have brought the software on it's own or with a GPS with has auto routing, or did a friend give you a copy?

If you already have a GPS with CN6 in it then just download Nroute and use it to do your voice prompts. you can also use the GPS for Oziexplorer, which out in the bush is the best to use because CN6 doesn't have all the roads, tracks and small towns on it. If you want a better map to upload into your GPS or view on your laptop then you can download Tracks4Auctralia about 35Megs, this will get you more 4x4 tracks but not much roads in towns.

Also I could be wrong here but you will need the 25 digit number to unlock the GPS 18 USB.

If you don't have the number then just buy a normal usb GPS and you can use T4A and Ozi.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I bought the laptop second hand and it had CN on it already. I'm now looking at what GPS to use with it. From reading various things it seems the cheapest way out would be to buy a GPS mouse. I can get the GPS 18 usb from JAS, I was just interested if anyone else used one of these and how they found it. I was under the impression the GPS 18 unit didn't work with Oziexplorer. The reason I was looking at the GPS 18 in particular was the fact I already had the Garmin software.

Thanks for the info on tracks4australia and nroute SA_Patrol. I have just checked them out and will download them tonight after work. I have asked JAS to put a GPS18 aside and I'll pick it up tomorrow. Once again many thanks.

Support for this GPS in OziExplorer has been available since Version 3.95.4b, way back in September 2004:

"Support for the Garmin GPS 18 USB GPS has been added. In OziExplorer configuration select the GPS Make as Garmin, GPS Model as Other Garmins, on the COM tab tick the "Garmin USB" checkbox and tick the "Use PVT for Garmin instead of NMEA" checkbox. "

No excuse now :-)

First check to see if the GPS 18 will work on your CN6.
CN6 will look for the GPS with the 25 digit number to make it work, there should be no worries using it with T4A and other Garmin type Topo maps
