Well, Stage 1 sounproofing is now complete. This was the front pasenger compartment. That alone made a huge difference to the internal noise levels.

Stage 2 has now been 90% done. This was the underbonnet. THIS has made an even more 'huger" difference!. It's almost as quiet as my old 100 series TD "Cruiser. The bonnet was far easier to do than the insides. Simply remove the bonnet, remove the existing thin felt soundproofing, stick the retaining pins onto the metal bonnet using blobs of "Sikaflex", replace the original thin stuff over the protruding pins and then push the new thicker soundproofing onto the pins. If you attempt this, be warned those pins are in fact very sharp nails and they cut like razors if ya catch yer hand on 'em. Trim off a few bits that were catching odd protrusions - battery hold down bolts, water pressure tank cap and the air con pulley, refit the bonnet and bingo -job done.

HOWEVER, (there's always a 'however" isn't there!) - the bonnet weight went up by 50% and it took 3 people to lift the bonnet back on and the I'm gonna have to make a bonnet stay 'cos the gas struts now can't cope ith the increased weight. Ongoing job.

But boy oh boy - it's QUIET! The truck is now noisier when idling than when it's going down the road. I'm pleased with the massive improvement.

Next is Stage 3 - the rear compartment. that bit should be easier 'cos it's relatively flat.

Cost so far - about $330.00 and well worth it.

Just as a headline - " Today, wife reverses Chevissan into huge tree. Huge dent and broken light fitting on rear of truck. Chevissan is in panel beater for repairs next week. Wife is in hospital today with split lip and black eye".

hahahahaha

Good report mate.....I would have thought the "music" coming from under the bonnet would have meant you could sell the car stereo and just list to that ROAR.

It would be a sound I would love to hear one of these days.......dreaming......

Actually Roachie, there is a ROAR, and it is "nice", but it's not that sound that blows me frock up. It's the low revving "plonkety, plonkety, plonkety" feel to it when it's accelerating from a standing start at tickover in second gear.

It's the sound of hearing each piston firing when it's doing 60 kmh in 5th, that turns me on.

"burbly,plonkety, burbly,plonkety, burbly,plonkety,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"

And that sound when ya take yer foot of just before the traffic lights. It reverberates right through ya,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, "burble, burble, burble, burble"

I love it when I talk dirty to me.

No 1,

I had a new Toyota. Never again. Too many people want 'em but don't want to pay for 'em!

Besides which, the servicing costs are outrageous. At least with the Chev I can do my own servicing - AND know it's been done properly.

I'd estimate that my former 100 series TD was costing me around $2500.00, at least, a year in servicing costs. The Chevissan will be costing me about $500.00 a year. That's a huge difference.

If I can possibly avoid it in future, I'll be choosing vehicles that don't have "electronic anything" on 'em.

This one will do me for the next few years.

stage 4 a decent lift so the misses won't like climbing in to it whilst doing the shopping or taxi duties.

I have to ask, what sort of bleep do you use under bonnet and where does one obtain same? Does the bonnet shake more or move around on it's rests more or not?

Desert,

The soundproofing was obtained from Marlin Seals and Soundproofing in Fremantle. They normally specialise in marine work - engine rooms, ships and boats etc. Ask for Mark, Tell him I sent ya. He'll know "the red Nissan with the V8 Chev in it"

It's not yer run of the mill proofing material that you'd get in an auto shop. This is serious noise reduction stuff containing a layer of the metal, barium. It weighs 8kgs to the square metre. Heavy stuff but it works well.

The bonnet doesn't move around any more than it did, but it is a fair bit heavier. However since I refitted the bonnet it's not quite lined up as good as it was before. Ongoing.

Funny things bonnets.

Boo Boo,

Nope. They only do sound proofing.

Contacts are:-

Marlin Insulation & Seals
Unit 2 / 11 Emplacement Cresc
Hamilton Hill
WA 6163

Phone:- 08 94332550

Ask for Mark.

I have no connection with the company, only to say they sell good gear and are great to deal with. Listen to what Mark tells ya as he knows his stuff.
