Try taking the covers off and take it outside and blow all the dust out of it with a compressor normaly does the trick

if it is the power supply u can normaly listen when u put a cd in the fans slow down but the dust cuts mine out so need to do it every 6 months

If its an AMD CPU then its a good chance it is overheating. This is typical of AMD if the CPU fan is running slow due to dust. If this is the case, replace the CPU fan ASAP before you do irrepairable damage to the CPU.

If it isnt an AMD CPU then it could be either faulty RAM or spyware.

Try updating your spyware software. If you dont have any installed, try Spybot or Adaware. When it is all updated, try deleteing all your history (Tools/Internet Options/Browsing History/Delete) then run the spyware program/s and see what happens. Delete any spyware infections that the programs find.

It may be worth while doing all this in "Safe Mode" (try pressing F8 on startup and select Safe Mode)

If you have an anti virus program, make sure it is updated and run it as well.

If all of the above fails, then there is a good chance that you have a physical problem like the CPU fan not running fast enough causing CPU overheating, or your power supply is faulty or there is a faulty RAM module.

Good luck

By turning off do you mean completely off or does it reboot?

My guess is the same as cruisers, overheating

My AMD used to do it Brew, would work OK with the side panels off, it just got too hot in the space in the desk with a slightly dodgy fan on very hot days.

Brew69,
It could well be overheating, despite being an intel CPU. Later model ones run every bit as hot as AMD processors.

Blow out the computer with an air compressor. Use it with the pressure low, not with the compressor pumped up or you may well blow out more than you want. Hold fans still while you do it, or air pressure may spin fan too fast and it can fly apart.:-( Pay attemtion to all heat sink and fan. Also the power supply.

Then check operation of fans. ie, power up with cover off and check they arer spinning at a good speed. I've seen them turning only slowly or not at all. Replace if necessary.

Happy days
