Many rules and limits are posted and enforced because irresponsible humans are too stupid to regulate their own behaviour and must have guidance like children. Sadly one observes humans putting others lives at risk by impairing their already limited skills with alcohol/drug abuse and giving not a thought to the consequences likely to be produced by their selfishness. Their main concern seems to be what they can get away with rather than what is safe and respectful of other human lives. If anyone is not sure what a safe alcohol level is ; next time you come across a serious motor accident in your travels , stick your head inside and see what I and other emergency workers experience. The image just might help you to formulate a figure ! I love a beer too - but at the END of the days travel !

As a Registered Nurse working in both Emergency Departments and Intensive Care Units I would have to AGREE ABSULUTELY with the above comments. Unfortunately, it only takes the loss of a loved one (or someone elses loved one) for the message to get through to some people.....

This is my view for what it is worth....Even though there are legal limits in place and most abid by them but you only have to see the cars parked on the side of the road where a booze bus is to see that there are others that don't and won't. My stance is that I will limit myself to one can of light/mid strenght beer, any more and I won't drive as I may
well be under the legal limit but if (
heaven forbid) that I had a serious accident which someone was injured, I would always be wondering if it could have been avoided if I was alcohol free- did that extra drink impair my judgement.
This is on the similar lines to driving tired which can be just as bad as driving under the influence.
So take it easy, drive within reason and at the end of the day put the car keys away and your feet up and enjoy a nice quiet drink.
If you are going to a party -take a taxi or take the swag!

I agree with Michael Why would you ask if it was enforced? You havent seen the 230498203948023894203489 TV commercials, magazine ads, sponsored car/bike races etc???
And Mark has a good point. Take a Taxi or Swag, or get a room in the pub for the night and get smashed and bother nobody.
13+years in the NSW Rural Fire Service, I've been to some nasty MVA's and one crew was involved in one MVA at 1am, where the car accident victims were HIV positive.. The Crew all got called in to the station at 4-5am to be told of the problem... Luckily none were infected but 3-4 months of worry. The car was hit by a drunk driver who was mildly injured, the other innocent car victims werent as lucky... Someone explain why thats not murder...
In the end, think of others.

We have rules/laws as a nation/state suposedly formulated to be in the best interest of the majority of the people, if and when self centred people wish thru a distorted sense of self worth,,,ego,,, alcohol,,,illegal drugs,,ect break these rules/laws we as responsible people of of this nation/state should demand and expect that the FULL punishment be implemented..
Just because You are in "the middle of nowhere" does not mean "the law of the land" does not apply,,,

Like I said , those who are not sure of a safe level of alcohol before driving , stick your head into a motor vehicle involved in a serious accident with persons trapped / injured and perhaps it may just help you to arrive at a responsible figure !

So what do we do about it ???? - As a current serving member of Victoria's finest, - yeah, held the hand of a dying child trapped in a wrecked car, Been to tell the family of the 20 year old that Johnny's never coming home, even if his 21st is next week, The court system continues to slap these pricks on the wrist, ( with $43 court costs, of course!)
- What do we do ??? stuffed if I know. - but ask me if i like catching the odd 0.05 ?? damn straight I do.
the people that do this kind of thing aren't gunna be reading this. - and if they are ........... "catch you later"!!!!

well Jarrod
for a start self rightous preaching does nothing but turn the person you are tying to convert away from your message, as i said in a later post stupid adds showing speeding cars with bashed about people in side not only desencitize people they end up having the opposite effect my kids look at these adds & go cool so the message is lost already, masive fines & loss of licence work
well on the casual offender but these need to be
rethought becauce the loss of large amounts of money also impact on the family of the person booked thus adding presure to the situation & in the case of problem drinkers just pushes them back to the bottle, thye solution is not going to be easy as the culture of drink driving has been ingrained as part of the australian way of life for long time & cultural change takes time,we need for our youth to have some where to go wild & let thier hair down without being intimidtaed but being encouraged to do it safely,& you as police need to leed from the front by working with people along side but not in control, become part of the community not its intimidator, having siad this non of the above will stop the repeat offender becauce as with all serial criminals they lack the abillityto change or tosee the error of thier actions therefor the only course of action is the removal of the offender out of society until they get the mesage, thier sentence should also inclued time in the emergancy ward & the morge please note i am not bagging the police they are not the problem & do the best they can with wht they have the problem is with the courts/ out of touch judges & polititions the sentencing laws need to be strenghtend to allow for murder charges to be taken agianst serous offenders by seruos offenders i dont meen those just on .005 or just over becauce it is easy to miss judge at such a low level but those over 008 or repeat offenders.you will also note that this may
well be the place some of the people who drink drive are becauce not to meny names or screen names have appeared on my prevous postof those who have never done it sorry for the soap box but you did ask
Regards Bruce

Bruce , I think it's not what some of us did in the past - but what we should have learnt from such behaviours which must influence present and future practise. We are the ones to set examples and educate our kids before they are exposed to the perils and responsibility of piloting a potentially lethal weapon. Driving licences are
too easy to get. Driver education , re consequences of dangerous/careless/drug abuse driving, must be introduced as part of high school curriculum including visits to hospitals/rehab centres where the message just might get through that it's NOT REAL COOOL to spend the rest of ones life in a wheel chair ! I feel certain some parents of deceased children could be recruited to a program in which their message of personal devastation would leave a lasting image for pre - learner drivers. WE need a responsible govt. to initiate a compulsory education plan , not for just one season but for all time. Yes, you're right Bruce, we're not all cleanskins but it's what WE do now that really matters.

I agree we are responsable for the future direction of society only up to the piont that our kids take over, the point im a making that by the time our kids reach that age we have alread lost becauce it is when they are
young that they are exposed to adds & political campains which even some adults dont get as example i use the me know fry anti cancer adds which were removed because of the negitive affect they wer having on egg sales & tourism ,bad sales pitch with obsquire message & i believe this is the problem of stoping drink driving ,as i said before this whole isue started becauce 1 person asked what the limit was he didnt know & was doing the responsable, thing to find out so as to not break the law .but due to brain washing & the fact that most probaly didnt know the answer them selfs it was decided to self rightuosly attack the man rather than sy
hay its .005 aust wide in some form or otherwhich is all wanted to know ,did you achieve your aim of shaming him into not driving after drinking who knows but all it achieved from my point of view was to bleep me off at the attiude he was shown may be this thread should be forwarded to a few poli's as ther seems to be some good ideas in it
please note if i have offended some of you that was not my intention, but subjects like this do need to be bandied about now & then if we are truely to make change happen a little revolution now & then is a good thing !!

One of the problems with car crashes is that we never get learn from others' mistakes. When a plane crashes there is a detailed investigation and we all get to hear exactly what went wrong. When a car crashes we hear things like a vehicle left the road, or a car collided with a tree. How about detail like the driver fell asleep, or the driver approached a bend too fast and ran out of skill, or the girl was lighting a cigarette and didn't notice the
stop sign. Unfortunately, the cause of most crashes remain a mystery, and the only message we get is speed kills, or drink drive bloody idiot.
Well it is self evident that speed kills because if we were all stationary there would't be any collisions. What speed kills? The speed that kills is the one that is too fast for the conditions - sadly this bears little relationship tp the posted speed limits. This is probably why most of us are pretty cynical about police and revenue raising. If all speed limits were set appropriately there wouldn't be a temptation to exceed them. As for drink driving how come .08 was OK for so long, and now .05 is the go. Frankly, I think some people are so unskilled, inattentive, stupid, that they are more of a
hazard than the cautious driver with a BAC of .08. Have you ever heard of anyone not getting their licence because thay were too stupid/incompetent? No, they're out there in their bloody excels just waiting to run up your ah,

I am one of NSW finest and agree with all other emergency service personell in that there is no better advertising campaign than seeing the results of a major accident. Unfortunately some drivers don't know there limitations, or ignore them, and become a danger to all others. I have had a family member run down by a drunk driver and leave the scene before police attended. The road rules are there to allow everyone to enjoy the roads. The blood alcohol limit was reduced from 0.08 to 0.05 in an attempt to bring down the road toll, and it worked.
Drivers need to learn to drive to the road conditions and not the posted speed limit. Rain, fog, wind, sand are some of the things that can effect the driving conditions but some drivers still think that if the speed limit is posted ast 80km/h then they must travel at 80km/h.
The only rule regarding drinking should be, if you are going to drive, don't drink.

i have to disagree about the advertising you only have to look to the road toll on any holiday period to see that people are not paying attention to these adds, nsw consitantly has high death toll over holidays
i believe people either dont get the message or even worse turn these adds off ,sorry to dis agree but in the face of the rising death toll on our roads ibelieve its time for a rethink of how we tackle this issue & i still maintain self rightous preaching & the type of adds showing death & destruction only pander to the vouyer in us all, as seen at all road accidents by the presence of rubber neckers & by standers. & yes i have help at a number of accidents & seen this happen people standing aruond gawking ask them for help & its amazing how many non english specking people there are

Licence at 15, alcohol at 21, asked for proof of age if you look less than 30. The problem is we get too much of everything all at once, and that inclusdes testosterone!

On a lighter note,
Two cops on patrol are sitting across the road from the local pub when they notice in amongst all the comings and goings in the
carpark, one poor soul staggering from one car to another, taking aim with his key and trying to unlock the doors.
The cops decide to do nothing for the moment as he wasn't hurting anyone and hadn't actually entered any vehicle therefore wasn't legally in charge of any vehicle, and he was still on private property. Besides he was damned good entertainment for the better part of an hour!
Anyway the poor soul finally made his way into a car, started it and proceded to drive out of the car
park. Needless to say he was pulled over and given a breathalyser.
0.00, yep, stone cold sober...
The cops were intrigued by his behaviour in the car par and asked him what he was doing. He stated that the hotel patrons had voted him "Designated Decoy" for the night.....
