Hi all
My prado was part of the recall lot for the change of rear axles. Shortly after that my handbrake went very loose and i made the adjustments on the starwheels. Cables etc and it was ok and hold at about 7 clicks on lever. however the lever still seemed smooth to reach the 7 clicks. Before it had not much resistance and just stopped at when brake engaged at 7-8 clicks and lever went no further.
Now after adjusting the star wheel it is more like a gradually increasing hardness in lever.
But my problem is after about a month it will not hold and i can pull lever right to the limit and handbrake are still wont hold.
What can be wrong ? Any suggestions? How can i take the drum cover off to inspect the inside? And what
tools do i need to remove it?
Any idea will be really great and if you guys can may be email some pics on the process would be even greater. And please don't recommend to take it back this toyota here in hedland have a bad reputation and this is the second time they saw this car and both times are come back as crap:((
thank you guys

Sounds like the handbrake still needs to be readjusted to me.
When adjusting the starwheel after removing the rear wheels, I tighten them up then back off just 4 clicks (instead of the 8 clicks recommended by Toyota) - as per the LCOOL instructions.
I would redo this before inspecting the inside of the drum. To do so is pretty easy - you just need to take off the caliper to remove the rear disc.
The Gregorys manuals for the Prado are pretty good.

Thank you Phil
The thing is i can adjust them through the hole and the left side starwheel tightens when i turn it downwards i set it about 4 clicks loose.
Then the right side (driver side) which are tightening turning upwards and i noticed today this side is not holding the settings and was about 8-9 clicks loose. I didn't count it. I would think both side satrwheels should be tightening n the same direction or up or down, when adjusting through the hole. I set them today and is ok for now but if i get answer for direction on the turning of the starwheels i do them again tomorrow. All this happenning after the axles had been changed by toyota. By the chance do you know which way those starwheels should be tighten?
Thank you Phil

Ervin,
The starwheels need to be adjusted upwards to tighten. That means the blade of the screwdriver is inserted below the starwheel and the handle moved down to tighten - usually do one notch at a time. When it is tight, it should be impossible to rotate the wheel. Then back off 3-4 notches.
I take it you had three wheel nuts on so that the disk was tight against the axle.

Thank you, just done the starwheel and now both tightens in the same direction. I set them the way so both tightens when turned down or lifting the inserted screwdriver. The reason? Before (same setting) one side was holding the adjustment and the other (right) side was getting loose for some reason. What happened to that side is i set it 3 clicks loose and in about a month it was about 8-9 clicks loose there where the loss of effectiveness in the handbrakeoriginated ( I think). At the moment it is holding firm with 8 clicks at the handbrake lever.
I will try it with its current setting and see if it's holds the settings ok or not.
Now i have a
gregory's manual for it and i see, the starwheel should be adjusted to tighten by turning the wheel up or pushing the screwdriver down, but that was the side i lost the adjustment and become loose so this is why i set them both to tighten when turning down or lifting the screwdriver. And yes i had 3 nuts on, tightened to keep things centered.
If its not holding the settings now i will set them both to tighten when the starwheel turned up or screwdriver pushed down..
Regards
Ervin

Hi krausz. I got a 90 series also, and for what I can add the handbrake sucks. Sounds like you got it more under control than I do,
mine has to be adjusted often. When I bought it originally the local garage had to do major work on the rear to get it RWC.

Tone,
I had 2 Prados and the handbrakes were good - but I did my own maintenance, and adjusted them as above. I think the problem is that the odd mechanic out there don't adjust them up enough, or do it the cheats way (at the handle, not at the wheel). And 4 clicks instead of 8 on each wheel makes a lot of difference.

Hey Phil. I would imagine you're right, I should get onto learning about it myself, shouldn't I??
