Hi All,

At home we have the dead locks, the window locks, the alarm, the back to base monitoring etc etc. the new caravan is fitted with a door lock that most kindy kids could crack.

Neurotic or precationary? Whilst in Bunnings- Ballina the other day I nearly collided with a stack of small electronic keypad safes (with a back up security key for if the batteries go flat) , each measuring 320mm long by 230 mm high by 200 mm deep. Allowing for walls of 20mm thickness that give about 8 litres of internal space, which we feel is more than enough room the wallet, the keys, the mobile etc etc whilst you are away from the van.

Yes it weighed in at about 3 kg (and I know we have to pull it around on our trips) but we feel much more comfortable for the installation. Wait for it ... it cost $29..... made in China of course.

Its construction seems to be robust enough to stop the opportunist rat bag that wants to spoil your day. We bolted ours through the floor in an obsure place using factory drilled holes in the safe.

Regards

Whenever you are considering security always remember that you may have to escape in a hurry....ie fire....never make it hard for you or your family to get out.

blue- the comment on roller shutters is made from lack of understanding of them, it is very hard to get in from outside but if trapped inside they will push out very easy. my many years in security i have seen this many times. and as far as security for valuables in vans and homes, think about floor safes. in the van a metal box can be welded to main chassis.

Yo Skier, take your valuables with you if you can.You might even consider an Alarm system for the van also like you put in your car this what we have done in the M/home & it can work if needed while your asleep.

Hi SKI'er
Have you thought of using a Blue Healer? They are the best security system anyone can get.

Cant see the problem, yes the caravan door catch is little better than a kindergaten toy, just make sure you dont take any valuabkles that arent replaceable, make sure all is covered by insurance, and surely when you are not in your car/van, you will be on a tour up a river or something, you will have your wallet, camera, keys, handbags etc with you?
Anyway go the safe of you feel it will be a help.

Cheers Pesty

We try to carry as little as possible, and to have the bare necessities in the car.
If you think a van with a lock is poor, think of the canvas walls on the CT and tent that we use.

But then if I was serious about getting into a van I wouldn't go near the doors, the windows would be easier, or even an axe or large knife on the aluminium skin.
A sharp knife through the window rubbers of a car and pop the glass is also very easy. Came across that one in southern Spain and Morroco. Some locals were doing a good few camper vans every night, in the middle of the camp site, and the people sleeping didn't hear or feel a thing.

Security is really more of the mind and heart, and what you really value.

I have one of these fitted in the gin palace & find it most satisfactory for the containment of documents, spare cash, camera etc.
One place we stayed they were some bored kiddies entering vans thru the roof hatches and doing all sorts of mischief & I ended up @ Bunnings & bought an alarm that simply screwed to the roof, The noise is earsplitting (much louder than a smoke alarm) and definatley causes others to look & see what is going on. Came with 2 remotes and runs on it's own batteries which means it works even if there is no power. $70 I think & well worth the insurance, APIA gave me a discount for having an alarm fitted, so money well spent.

SKI er
Most decent Caravan Accessory people have the Fiamma Security Handle.
It is a good piece of kit, two sizes available, remember to lock it open as well as locking it shut!!!
