Well after many weeks of looking, and the very much appreciated assistance and advice from Eric, my Ma and Pa have picked up an immaculate GU 4.8.

This question is more about range than cost, as running on LPG it's a bargain no matter how you look at it.

On the first tank of LPG, with everyone having a drive and putting the boot in to test out how much grunt it has, it delivered 25L/100km. It should settle down to a bit less than this in normal driving.

They are going to tow a 21' van weighing about 2400 kg loaded.

Thoughts from anyone who tows a big van with one of these would be appreciated. Just how far can they expect to travel on 72L of LPG?

not far
in a late edition of one of the 4wd mags they did a tow test from memory the patrol used 27 or 28 liters per100kms towing 2500kg on petrol so gas just ova 30
so maybe 300kms range?

Careful Jimbo - you might get converted !

I use 20 20 rule - 20% more because its gas and roughly 20% with a reasonable load.

So from acredited 17.2lt/100km standard (I assume auto) this is around 21 with gas / no van and 25 with big van.

Are you sure its 72lt gas ? - thought most were 92lt.

If 92 this gives 92/25 = 360km odd.

Congratulations to them - I think they will love it so much they won't care about fuel cost. I just have a bigger petrol tank to achieve 1000km plus range

Robin,

Thanks for the feedback. If they can 25 towing the van the range won't be too bad.

My understanding is that the tanks are safety valve limited to 80% of total capacity. Therefore a 90L tank will have a capacity of 72.

ATB,

Jim.

Yep pretty hard to find a 90% fill one now, but thats a small tank , most of fitted ones were bigger to allow for roughly the same actual gas as petrol tank was.

A friend at work has had his gas on for a few weeks and is returning 11c/km economy without the van....and stopping every 250kms for gas allows one to take in more of the scenery :)
