What is the best brand of axe handle for a 4 lb axe head, and who carries them (preferably Queensland/
gold coast).
Thanks
Pedro

I don't know if they are still available but Australian Spotted gum is good or american hickory. Don't know about brands. Probably all made in China these days.
You can probaly get a good fibreglass or carbon fibre one as
well.

Hi Peter,
I have used hickory for years. They are dearer that the cheaper wooden handle, but much stronger, and last a lot longer. You should be able to pick on up at any good hardware store, eg Mitre 10 etc... I would have thought that there would be many stores up there on the
Gold Coast.

I agree with Stephen. Hickory handles are very good, but some what expensive (particularly when taken from
young wood).
However a handle is only one part of a good axe. If the head is not of a similar quality and seated correctly you're really wasting money.
Finally, to achieve performance from an axe you need to develop sharpening skills. None of the above will matter all that much if the maintenance of the tool is not understood. Hope this helps.
Regards
Kim

With the money you save by NOT buying a handle I would buy a Fiskars axe from say Bunnings. I used to split my own firewood in Europe, and am truly fed up with wooden handles - especially commercially available ones.
axes
No financial interest involved, just a happy customer (and too many axe heads flying past my head;-))

Thanks to all who responded.
Will check the suggestions out starting with Bunnings who have the Fiskar at $80.
4X4mad where do you get the "Pumb" handle?
