Hi All

Had a quick trip to Mt Stirling and around on Sunday, great day out and only saw 2 other vehicles the whole day, and they thought they were in some competition climbing the new car park at craigs hut, good work fella's, and we all wonder why things get shut down. Anyhow I know this will come back to me, but what are mates for. I went up there with the little sisiter of Miss Lucy troopy, Miss Jeep. Let me say miss jeep is a great looking little jeep and recently had new rims and mud tyres fitted. Between the monument track and craigs hut, it almost fell apart. First part of the monument, 1 lost mud flap, half way up ripped the other one half off and then at craigs hut, found a rock with the rear bumper.

Not one to focus on others misfortunes but young Robbo is never one to miss an opportunity.

Virgin Jeep - (No more)

She:-

Took off like the brides nightie up Buttercup lane and never missed a stroke so to speak.

Tad jittery and skittish at first but settled down nicely for the ride.

Showed apprehension at big/large 'things' but eventually her breeding and style came out when tackling same.

Overall, she climbed and rode those 'things' whilst peaking at the summit of her endeavours without breathing hard or raising a sweat.

She employed 'safe 4wd practice' at all times to ensure no unwanted 'happenings'

and

returned home looking like she had been on a 6 week honeymoon where 4wd-ing was the norm - morning ,noon and nighty night night.

Just a pity her jockey had no idea of how to safely reverse such a lovelly filly in a huge dead flat carpark with only one other vehicle in it.

Yep! straight back into the second biggest rock in Australia.

Bent & compressed the plastic rear end something shocking which caused other bits of plastic trim to fall off.

Bonz maybe the workshop/tool - chit magnet and Roachie the 4wd 'snakeoil' - chit magnet, however I am now sure I can take the '4wd out there' - chit magnet title.

Come with me or let me ride in your truck, and if it hasn't happened before , then it will whilst I am there.

(ROFLMAO) Roachie & Truckster - you just had to be there to appreciate it.

Ads, I think Ms Lucy deserves a medal for being couragous enough to try REVERSING up some of those fairly steep climbs. (I'm assuming he was reversing up the hills, otherwise how could any driver hit a large rock with his back plastic bumper bar-lette? Sounds like a 6" lift and steel bar cum dual spare wheel carrier might be next on the shopping list......hahahahaha

Attention Bonz

For your information Mr 'smarty-pants' the virgin's underneath body armour (ie - chastity belt) worked a real treat.

Everything is still intact so to speak with a couple of scrapes here and there where some rocks etc tried to get fresh with her.

A set of lockers would have made things a lot easier, as the short wheel base didn't go too well with the 'moonscape' holes.

However, a bit of judicious 'road building' fixed that and away she went like the thoroughbreed that she is.

Pity about that big mother of a rock though. $1500 plus this time and I will find out the exact amount tomorrow.

GIO were excellent about it quote: "and you won't lose your no claim bonus for this sir"

Roachie:

One thing I have learn't from you 'gadget man' t is, anymore gadgets and I to will require a 6.5L transplant.

Soooooooooooooo! no steel bar/s, no nothing.

Perhaps an air-locker or two when SWMBO is looking the other way or visiting Adelaide.

But thats it for Ms JEEP.

You don't think SWMBO wasn't at a high level of excitement when looking at the up and coming terrain 'her' daily driver was about to travel over.

Ed

It is a thing of beauty - or was until I 'kissed' that rock in the car park., and peforms off road like a F1 Ferrari.

It is a 05 CRD KJ Cherokee with variable pitch turbo.

Everything is automatic or 'fly-by-wire' AND controlled by management computers which are something else to get used to.

It has a 2 & 1/2 in suspension lift, underneath body armour from front to back including the fuel tank, and the second set of tyres which you see on it.

The tyres and wheels have just been sourced, painted, matched and fitted on Saturday night and this was their first outing.

Are you on AusJeepOffroad.com ?
As someone asked about the monument track in the KJ section recently :p

So would you recommend a lifted KJ with MTR's without skid plates to go up monument track?

Nah! this is the only forum I belong to and it manages to consume a heap of my time at that.

Right at this point of time I can't visualise the underneath of a KJ petrol, so I won't comment on that model.

The diesel has the oil filter that comes out horizontally from the bottom of the engine towards the transmission and whilst a dream to service , is just begging to be belted off by a rock or stick.

Other than that they are really way too low at stock standard to attack the monument track, especially the condition its in at the moment. ( I like that type of condition)

Also there are two 'earth berms' that are high and with acute entry and exit angles, that even with the 2 & 1/2 in lift it 'bottomed' as the front wheels dropped over, and the rears pushed it up and over whilst sliding on the body armour.

Some of the rocks are large enough to touch up the fuel tank and transmission/transfer case.

In summary: I wouldn't attempt it without the lift , body armour and what I deem appropriate tyres.

Now thats not to say that it can't be done with a lot of sweat, effort, switched on navigator who knows what he/she is doing and a modicum of good luck.

It would be a real bitch to have to do a recovery from without a fully equipped support vehicle on that track.

In view of that, now that I have done it I would most probably in future use the 'stock standard' Troopy which romps it in.

little miss trucky

Cant recall anyone saying it was difficult, but there were some huge holes on the steep part of the track. Someone like your self might have trouble cause you might run into another human up there. We have never had problems on it, but have seen plenty that have. You send some one with little experience up there and a stock car, I will bet they will bleep themselves and have a wee bit of trouble. So lets get you in the pathy your other half has and I am happy to come and watch you drive that nissan up there.

I have this weekend free if your up to it. I am sure we can get a crowd there

Afternoon Ed & Troglodyte others.

I have been waiting for some info before replying .

Firstly the JEEP had no mechanical problems driving the monument track, nor did it have any 4WD issues.

Not one piece of recovery gear was used as I had none anyway.

Now the piece of info I was waiting for was the Repair quote for that little teeny weeny scrape on the left rear corner of the rear B-bar in the Pic above.

$1,997.37 thank you very much.

GIO have inspected and allowed same plus a hire car and it will done next week.

The PROBLEM with the KJ JEEP is that the manufacturer has attempted to make a mean as snake p i s s 4WD into an attractive/luxury town car for the ladies whilst maintaining the aforementioned original 4WD mechanical concept.

They have encased it in yards of very expensive moulded plastic, softened the suspension (lowered) for the girls, left the underneath unprotected in the mistaken belief that no one in their right mind would want to risk 'scratching' their 'baby' off road.

Just like Toyota has attempted with the 100 series, and Range Rover with the Disco series etc etc (Nissan is in the Etc's).

Now to answer your original query:-

'So would you recommend a lifted KJ with MTR's without skid plates to go up monument track?'

Ooops! I have just noticed (LIFTED KJ with MTR'S WITHOUT Skid Plates) (having a senior moment)

In view of that - YES I would, just be carefull

It's not a question will the vehicle - get there, make it etc etc - its what the repair bill is likely to be for something you didn't have to do.

They are very expensive suckers to repair.

This by the way is the second rear bar in three months. SWMBO snicked the other side in the first incident.

That is why the Troopy which is encased in steel - not F***ing Plastic - is the usual vehicle of CHOICE when doing chit like the monument track and now that I have an idea what the JEEP will handle if necessary, it most probably won't see much in the way of rocks again.

Seriously though - the KJ will bleep it in 4WD ability wise , but one slip, large rock underneath on the sills etc then the plastic fantatsic bill might bankrupt you.

Regards

Ken Robinson

The JEEP God will get you for that and when he is finished you will be minus the other thumb. (LOL)

And while we are on the subject,

What is it with you galoots, that when you see the worlds No 1 4WD 'chit in' Australia's version of the R U B I C O N trail, and with ease I might add, you want to slag, bag & rag such a wonderous, momentous occassion.

Its the 'tall poppy syndrome' all over again - just love to cut us high end achievers down.

I think I will pack up my 'dash lights' and go home and start working on the first draft of my Libel and defamation writs for you lot. Especially that Craizie coota for starting this off.

All I have to do is get his real name and address so I can serve him with same.

Can you help with his details and while your at it add yours also.

Hankook - Dynamic MT'S

Very nice tyre and why did I choose them - weeeeeeeeel its like this.

JEEP in their never ending quest to be 'different' to all other vehicle makers decided on a 235 x 70R x 16 as the approved size.

It would appear that no manufacturer makes a MT in this configuration. (the 70 profile just scares them off)

Ah! just get one thats close you say, go up a size or two young man. Well it is not quite as easy at that, due to front wheel clearances when going from lock to lock.

Bearing in mind that it is under lease so I can't do anything that may cause a 'problem, I decided on 225x75x16 which is only a mm or two different in diameter and bugger all in width.

The tyre fitter was happy, I was happy and the price was more than happy.

I have had Hankooks as a town tyre before and they are still on the old Bluebird (dog moblie)some 60,000kms later, without a puncture or any trouble, so the off roaders are going to get a go this time.

BFG list a 235/70R16 MT but that's about it. Definately a lot more choice with the 225/75R16.
