Gday all, i'm back home after a week in the lockup (hospital) and thought i'd post this to remind us about staying on top of the whole sun smart ethos.
I normally take care in the sun and do the whole "slip slop slap" deal, mainly due to my fair skin because i burn very easily. But i havent taken too much attention to the whole melanoma thing because i only had one mole on my whole body, so thought i wasnt at a big risk there.
WELL WELL i thought id get it looked at recently because it was a little dark and had grown slightly over a few years, YEP melanoma, you beauty..........
Result - one 3 inch round hole in the front of my shin about half inch deep, skin graft taken from thigh and stapled into the hole. A week stuck on my back with elavated leg in a hospital bed, having all the joys of being friendly with a strange bottle and what looked like an old hg hubcap LOL....
Now at home on crutches for another week and then a long slow recovery period.
So what i'm saying is dont muck about Get checked out even if you aren't in a risk category, if you catch em early enough you dont need skin grafts etc.
Take care everyone, cheers Brad.

Thanks for the warning Brad, and sorry to hear of your melanoma.
Many of us grew up in era when we didn't understand the problems associated with being long hours uncovered in the sun.
Goodness knows how many hours I spent on
the beach as a lifesaver and didn't worry about slip slop slap.
Just get a good tan, that's all we wanted.
Now we know a lot more and it certainly pays to keep your eye on any spots on your body.
Dave

An important post Brad and hope all goes
well for a speedy recovery.
It doesn't seem to matter too much who you are or what colour your skin is these days as we, the boomers that is, were all guilty in the past and now is the time to be vigilant.
It's good to see most kids take reasonable care apart from the absolute air heads, read fashion conscious, who are heading for disaster further down the road.

Hi Brad
I had a melanoma removed about 12 years ago and was lucky as it got caught in time but not before becomming a grade 2 one. I was really lucky as my doctor missed that one and only sent me to a specialist because I thought another one was changing and she flet it was too big for her to remove. You can be lucky. I am certainly not the skin group to be prone to them as I have olive skin but have since then had about 20-25 moles removed which some certainly had the potential to turn into a nasty. I now have a specialist visit yearly to be checked out all over.
I tend not to use a lot of slip slap slop as I beleive a lot of the ingrediants in sun cream are made with a lot of chemicals and I sometimes wonder if that is half the problem these days - that is just my opinion. I use long sleeved shirts and pants and large brimmed hats.
Cheers
Jenkie

Good luck with the recovery.
Mate of
mine had a large BCC removed which he let go and he has been out of action for a month with a large hole on his shin and skin graft from his thigh.
Did a lot of sailing when I was
young and now suffer the consequences. I visit the dermatologist every 6 months.

Hi Bradley,
Ihope you have a full recovery and I know what you went thruogh as last May I had a level 4 mellanoma removed from under my arm which is not a place that gets much sun.It was so close to the lymph nodes that I had to have a big op. to remove 19 nodes and Iwas VERY lucky that all the nodes proved negative when tested as it would have been bye bye Rambler if it had got into the lymph nodes.Coming from the Cairibbean Ispent a lot of time in the sun so the damage mihgt have been done then as Inever used sunscreen.Ialso go for a yearly check up by a specialist. My advice is to have all moles looked at as the one that proved a problem for me did not look much different to a normal mole except that Ihad not noticed it being there before.Istill spend a lot of time in the sun but am aware to get dodgy moles checked. For those that don't know mellanoma is one of the fastest spreading and deadliest cancer known---SO BEWARE!

Hi mate, geez thats a lot of bits to lose in one go LOL ..
They were trying to talk me into being a test mule for node tracking and testing etc. but ive been a guinea pig enough in the last few years with the initial cancer i had, so for the moment im keepin as much of me as i can intact :-).
Yep they can spread real quick, just like the other big one us blokes have to watch out for.....
Heres to less moles - more beers LOL....
