Hi, Can anyone tell me if the safari Turbo for the 2.8 hilux diesel is equivalent to a Garrett T25 or the CT20 Surf turbo.
I just purchased a kit 2nd hand and it is stamped (Safari Turbo) all over it ?

I thought the Safari Turbo kit had a Garrett on it, Cause there meant to be the top of the line I thought ?

Or would a Garrett turbo fit on the Safari kit if I wanted to change it ?

Although I don`t much turbo`s I just want the best power I can get out of the 2.8D.

Thank You for any Answer.

It’s probably a garret but just has safari Stamped on the Housing but the internals would be garret.

Not sure to be honest with you, but I doubt safari would make their own turbo’s

Cheers

ditto what was said previous.
CT20 is for a 2.4 litre motor though.
The 2.8 goes great with the turbo, but your better advised not to get the "best power you can get out of it"
Stick to 8 or 9 psi boost and you will have a reliable middle of the road vehicle.
Go overboard and it WONT last.

Thanks for that information guys. Would I have to get it tuned ? One bloke said just richen the fuel mixture on the fuel pump by a 1/4 of a turn and you`ll be right ?
Its got a 2" dump pipe, shuold I get it built to 2.5" right through ?

Are you going to fit it yourself? I did my one myself (about 5 or 6 hours), but its best to get a fuel injection mob to fit a pyro (or buy one for permanent fitment) and adjust the exhaust temp (fuel rack) like that.
Those guys who might fit 20 kits exactly the same every year into a Hilux likely get to know where the rack adjustment is likely to go, but its an expensive risk to just make a guess with a one off fitting.

Pyrometer is a temperature probe that measures the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) at the turbo. Its used for a variety of things depending on the size of the engine, but at the end of the day a turbo can only handle so much heat before the spools collapse etc.
So after fitting the turbo a fuel injection bloke would either fit a test unit into the exhaust, or install a permanent one for a few hundred bucks and then set the maximum fuel so the temp is within a certain limit. Handy for when you are towing etc and if you like lots of guages etc.
After the fuel rack is set though common sense achieves a similar outcome at a cheaper cost, with less to confuse the missus who's not sure how to read the fuel guage!
Also handy for diagnosing problems like burnt valves.

I think J-Car make them along with a few other guage makers.

Wouldnt you ask what brand of turbo it is before fitting?

No, its nowhere near as easy as 'upping the pump 1/4 turn'.. I was told that and I couldnt notice I actually had fitted one.

if your goin to this effort, pay someone to do it properly.

Dont know where your located but turbo glide at wollongong will fit for approx $500, dont know wether thats cheap or not but just an option for you. They will dyno for you before and after and do adjustments accordingly. They told me exhaust gas temp must not exceed 500d and will run approx 8 pound boost as not to damage motor. I decided againsty it after advice given to me on here in regards to overheating problems. Is it the one that was on ebay a couple of weeks ago ???I saw a safari one on there to suit a 2.8 hilux, also if you have air con check that the pipes (ones coming out of compressor) wont be in the way as when I spoke to turboglide they asked me wether I had genuine air or after market air, might be a point before you pull all apart. Thanks for your reply steve.
Im located in Brisbane so I`ll chase up some one here to fit and Dyno. For $500 I think thats is pretty good value. The air con Pipes are`nt in the way.Only that little vacuum idle up switch that sits on the back of my A/C compressor, But thats easy enough to move.
I almost decided against it also but checking through other forums it seems that they over heat due to a restricted exhaust system or possibly not tuned properly. But I could be wrong and yet to find out.
Yep, thats the one off ebay but talking to the guy he said he`s had no trouble whatsoever since it was fitted about 3yrs ago.
Well my hilux has 550,000 kms on it just changed the engine at 510,000kms
and next year it`ll be taking me and family to the cape without any troubles.
Did that fitment cost include an exaust system ?
Cheers.

Hi, no that didnt include the new exhaust, I already have 2 1/2 on my lux with extractors which made a differance not much mind you but was noticeable. Will be interesting to see if you have any heating issues hopfully you dont and all goes well. Might also pay to replace the oil feed line that runs from the block just near oil filter and runs up to feed the vacume pump on the back of alternator they have banjo fittings either end, they often split and are a bastard to replace once turbo is on especially if its done 500k and wasnt changed when new motor went in. Good to see you got good klms out the old motor, I feel myn has a long way to go yet with it just coming up to the 300k mark now. You obviously changed your oil reguarly which is vital on the 2.8's as you would know they clag up real quick if not changed. Keep us informed on how you go with it all. Regards Steve M

Thanks for that info steve.
I got one price today

Fit 2nd hand turbo complete unit and reseal some sealing faces on it they reckon, which means pulling it off the manifold. $550

Dyno tune and adjust air/fuel ratio $290 up to $350

2.5 inch exhaust system around $300

Stuff it ! I`ll fit it and just get tuned. Most likely early next year.
I`ll check that oil feed line too.

My old motor was still running fine after 500,00 just using 2ltrs of oil every 5000km
and the fuel pump seals were leaking, didn`t blow any noticable smoke. Only changed it cause I did`nt think it would last much longer.
Let you know how it all goes.
Regards.
