Your hand winch probably came with a wire cage for cable storage. It has sharp pointed ends and is awkward to use to say the least.

Ditch it!

Go to your friendly tyre place and get a wheelbarrow tyre from their used tyre heap. Store your winch cable in it. No more busted fingers or damaged car interiors, and it's quicker too (just roll the tyre next to the cable and guide it inside!)

Not my idea, heard it from somewhere else, but it's so simple and efficient!

Have a good one!

Can't say I've ever had a problem with the cable frame. Keeps the cable nice and neat. I keep the hook end cable tied to the frame and it lives in my rear draw.

originally i got the tip that a motorcycle tyre could be used. but for my recent trip on the canning i needed all the space i could & used a wheelbarrow tyre which is just big enough for the tirfor cable & of course is much easier to store than the original metal reel

I will try it too. Have a lack of storage space so its going to be a problem that way, But I reckon the space tradoff is worth the extra ease of the tire idea!

i think the wheelbarrow tyre is slightly smaller than the original metal reel (not that i have actually measured the difference)
