Just seeing if anyone has recently travelled on the Great Central Hwy (WA) and could tell me what the road conditions were like.

Mate,

Did it in March and it was like a highway. Very few corrugations and generally in very good shape though it may have changed since then. It is a pretty boring drive so I would look at the Gunbarrel for a little more adventure.....

Geez it must have been upgraded. Was always referred to as the Great Central Road in my day. Or the track to LA.
Have they tarred it already ? :))))

No not tarred, just a reference to how good a dirt road it is.....Sorry won't use that analogy again.....

Teabag, these bits in my post :)))), indicate a smile. In other words I was just being a pain. Doesn't matter what you call a track, doesn't alter the conditions.
As you probably know that track was surveyed some years ago (or at least parts were) in preperation for tar etc. Part of the plan to connect Gladstone with Kalgoorlie area. I think it was going to be called the Great Central Highway ?

I realise you where trying to be funny???? So I thought a sarcastic comment was in order? Maybe I was wrong? I believe it will be some years before they Tar the Great Central as I don't think there is enough people using it to justify the cost. For a dirt road it is very good.....

Hi Shane,
I did it towards end of June and it was no problem, although later, possibly July, I heard it had been closed due to heavy rain and vehicles were being redirected. It may have been graded since then.
Cheers.

Came along the Gunbarrel and then on the GCR for the last few hundred k's to Ularu during June/July this year. The first part of the road was 100kp/h smooooth, then deteriorated with some shocking corrrrrugations. My old driving lights fell to bits on this section (after 15 years hard work).

Like any outback road, you won't know 'till you get there as road conditions can change daily. Best just check to see whether it is closed or not!!

Enjoy,

Mark

We went along there at the end of August, Gunbarrel Hwy, Heather Hwy then GCR to Uluru. GCR was in fantastic shape on the eastern end. One of the others did most of the GCR and said it was good most of the length.

It doen't take long to change out there though.
