Johnny boy
Hi all
I have 100ser 98mod Diesel L/C with a safari turbo fitted it has done 210,000 km
I bought it with 100,000km it never seems to use oil but upon my return trip from picking up my van in Vic (I'm in NSW) I noticed the oil half way down the stick ?
It was fine in Albury then I drove to
Bendigo then home and noticed once I was home it was low now I admit I'm a novice at towing the van and may have over reved it on some hills but is this common as I'm a bit concerned .
Regards J.B.

Doesn't sound like a lot of oil used if it was working hard, wouldn't panic, just keep an eye on it.

JB,
If it was my vehicle I would be concerned . I towed a caravan 10,000kms with my 80 series diesel(170k on the clock) and never had to top up the oil once and believe me I was not being gentle with the revs. I would be looking for reasons, but thats me and I'm a worry wart.

Hi J.B.
I would not be too concerned especially if it was working hard on a hot day.
I have an 80 series 1HZ diesel with an aftermarket turbo and use it mostly for heavy towing.
I use fully synthetic oil and change oil and filter every 5000km. I have noticed that when I hit the 4500km mark my engine can use about the same amount of oil as yours has if I work it hard on a highway run towing the trailer sailer. Up to the 4500km mark it will not use a drop of oil.
You will also be pleased to know that you have about 10 litres of oil capacity and the low mark on your dipstick is when it has dropped about 600ml so you have probably only used about 250ml all up.
My guess is your oil has just reached it's use by date which can hit earlier than some people think. I would change your oil and filter and just watch it closely for a while but don't be too concerned.
Cheers,
Brett

Could be the grade of oil you are using also (or whoever
services the vehicle).

Maybe when you had the last service they did not re-top up after the filter fills.
I towed my van Mt Isa to
Perth and maybe added half a litre, The 1HZ now has 651,000klm and can still do the 10,000 change period without adding oil,

i wouldnt be to concerned about it either
remember in most cases the distance beween the full line and empty is usually a littre
at work most diesel get there
services every 5000k or so and we usually check the dipstick before we drain the sump to see if there using oil between
services most use a little
cheers

If you have been using the vehicle around town a lot before picking up the van then maybe you had some contamination that burned off when the vehicle was towing, I suggest that you just keep an eye on the oil consumption over the next 5 thou and see how it goes. No need to panic at this stage as others have said.
