AFAIK it is no different to any other town of its type. Ya just have to know how to deal with the "locals" Bit of an eye opener if you havnt come accross that sort of thing before. Have stopped of there a few times and stayed ther once - no problems bsides one
young lady walking barefoot into the bar and casting dispursions over every white persons parentage loudly before leaving - there is a swimming pool there now - If you reeeeely get desperate

I've been in & out of
Laverton for the last 20 years. It never really changes it's character, which is that of a typical small goldfields town. Sometime the Shire has money and the place is clean and tidy, sometimes they're broke and it's a schitthole.
The Desert Inn is the only pub in town and always good for a slice of reality now and then. I can identify with the story of "the
young lady with the mouth", seen it heaps of times and now I just ignore it. I used to have some excellent, but "darker", prospecting mates in
Laverton so I'm almost immune to the "compliments" form the locals.
It's always had a swimming pool, but it only opens in the hot season which is starting now.
The
Laverton Sports Club USED to be a great place for a drink and a good meal, but it may have gone downhill since WMC left about 15 years ago!
Wednesday arvo used to be great entertainment on the main street just outside the pub. Wednesday was pension day,,,,,,,,,I'll say no more ;)
If you do go there, have a trip out to
Lake Carey, but go there on the
Mount Margaret Mission Road to Golden Cliifs. The view down the lake/salt pan is spectacular from Golden Cliffs. The locals will tell you how to get there.
I've found a lot of gold in that lake in years gone by.
Other than prospecting, bush driving or working, there's SFA in
Laverton.

Thanks bilbo ,
Yeh i figured it was like you described. Like i said i came through there about 4 years ago when we did the inland highway . I have spent a lot of time around
Derby,
Fitzroy crossing & numerous other
places that fit the bill as you described .
Well i will know shortly if i am going there hopefully will check out the lake when i do. Did you notice any camels & donkeys in the area when you was there last ?

I've seen camels many times but usually always about 100 kms to the NE of
Laverton. However, earlier this year there were camel tracks between
Laverton and
Leonora. This would have been about 50 kms east of
Leonora. I've also heard reports of 'em being almost IN the town eariler this year.
I also spotted camel tracks and a dead camel as far west as
Meekatharra. I've never, ever seen 'em that far west before. It was a big bugger too! Camel is the only animal that worries me out there. So bloody unpredictable.
No donkeys, ever.
Plenty of donkeys further north around
Newman.
