Hey folks,

SWMBO and I are going for our second ever camping trip this weekend and I'm looking for a nice spot not too far from Canberra (2 - 4hrs drive).

I've only got a forester XT so pretty much has to be no worse than gravel road/really easy track entry. Our preference is for pit loos, shaded camp areas and some running water near by (not tap water, creek type running water) for recreation and cooling down. National/State parks are preferred. We'd also prefer to go inland rather than towards the beach so we can stay out of the public service stampede ;)

Extra points for places where we're more likely to be alone. :)

Any help GREATLY appreciated!

Cheers,

Demented

If I'm guessing correctly, I went there a few weeks ago with you????? Very nice spot. Only problem is your not camped right next to the water, it's about 100m away.......Very nice all the same......

Try between Bombala and Candelo. Several places on Postmans track and also 6 Mile Creek. Postman's track is an easy 20Km dirt drive to places near good water. Was there a month ago during the week. No mess, beautiful sandy stream very quiet and alone. Not sure how things are on the weekend. Normal NP facilities at all three locations. Six Mile is nearer Candelo and beside road which carries about 3 cars an hour. I have been there when there are other campers - but lots of room and the sites are separated. It is open rain forest with stream skirting the camp. Again alone and the 20-40 Gang gangs at dusk put on a great show.

This is really about bush touring rather than 4WD. Postmans could get interesting in the wet. There's at least one creek crossing. Shallow last month.

Best regards

Chris

I'd recommend Geehi (back of Snowy mountains). A lovely camping spot, a trout stream, a great view of the mountains from your tent and plenty of easy 4WD'ing. Sparky

Agree with Oz Travellers re Geehi - top spot.

Another good spot (though you won't be alone) is Coolendel on the Shoalhaven River. Commercially run campsite but dirt cheap, sensational shady camping spots, hot showers and real toilets to keep the less hardcore campers happy, the river is more healing than the Ganges, great 4wding nearby (Yalwal etc). If you have kids, there are dozens of wombats, wallabies and peacocks on the property and heaps of bike riding tracks. They have a website (www.coolendel.com.au) but it doesn't do it justice.

I went on a September weekend a couple of years ago, and the closest people to us were about 100 metres away. The owners say it gets busier in summer holidays, but never gets to the point where you would complain about the crowds.

Anyway, just a suggestion, particularly if you want a hassle-free spot.

Cheers and beers

Hey Demented when are you thinking of doing this?
I recon one of the top campingk spots is Gillards beach, but you don't like the beach so I'll keep my remarks to myself.
Nice spot at Yarangobilly, on the river, toilets and caves nearby...Or try Wombeyan.
further south some nice spots on the forrestry roads that run of the Imlay Road. As to being alone well thats a problem, rarely can you be alone these days....

Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control, work has meant that we've had to cancel this weekend.

Thanks heaps to everyone who replied. I'll keep them all in mind when we finally get some time away!

Cheers,

Demented
